What Neil Armstrong really said when he stepped on the moon
I remember watching this event in the family room of our house in a suburb of Cincinnati in 1969. I was 13 at the time. He really meant to say, "That's one small step for a man......"

Really, why is this even news? He forgot an article, but still does not lose any meaning with his quote? Would anything have changed had he used an "a"? No.

I don't think it's that big a deal, but there is a difference between the two phrases....

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" = One small step for the human race ("man"), but one giant leap for the human race ("mankind"). That's contradictory.

"One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" = One small step for Neil Armstrong ("a man"), but one giant leap for the human race ("mankind").

I like Pete Conrad's first words on the moon on Apollo 12... "Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that's a long one for me.''

But did anyone think that the quote was meant to be taken in this way? No. Everyone took it as the latter.

To tell you the truth, I have always been confused by that statement, "it's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

It makes much more sense to me now that I know what he really meant to say.
