Orioles claimed Ardoin on waivers
The Mets, seeking to upgrade their backup catcher and add infield depth, had been talking to the Rockies about acquiring catcher Ardoin and infielder Luis Gonzalez for a minor-league pitcher.
Ardoin, 32, was designated for assignment by the Rockies last Friday, but the Orioles claimed him on waivers, gaining exclusive negotiating rights with the Rockies.
Ramon Castro, the Mets' primary backup catcher, underwent surgery last week to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The Mets' current backup is Mike DiFelice.
It is not clear whether the Mets are still interested in Gonzalez, 27. Chris Woodward is currently the Mets' only backup infielder, but the Mets could promote Class AAA infielder Anderson Hernandez after rosters expand on Friday.
The deadline for setting post-season rosters, however, is Thursday at midnight ET.
In return for Ardoin and Gonzalez, the Rockies likely would have received Class AA right-hander Matt Lindstrom, 26, or Class AA right-hander Henry Owens, 27.
Owens currently is pitching for Team USA in the Olympic qualifying tournament. Neither he nor Lindstrom has pitched above Class AA.
