10 year anniversary to change in welfare
Good article in USA Today on change in welfare law enacted in 1996. It talks about some of the successes and areas that can be improved upon. Would be interested to hear some of the views of others....

That article is grea. It points out both sides of the results from the changes made.

You feel sorry for the people who are having a tough time, but I like the how the kids of these women are seeing their struggle and making better like choices for the future.

I liked the way they went back to the same people that they had interviewed when the changes were first implemented to show their progress or lack thereof.

Just over 5 years ago, a columnist in the Wash Post (maybe nationally syndicated) was screaming that a catastrophe was looming b/c of Welfare Reform. That at the 5 year mark all the mistakes w/ this effort would be clear b/c the economy had slowed. He was yelling that we MUST go back to the old ways to avert this disaster.

Damn, I wish I had saved that piece.

Overall I think it's good. It's a perfect example that people can reach across the aisle to get things done with a dem in the WH and republicans in the congress. I think there is more work to be done to ensure that people would rather be working than staying on welfare roles, but all in due time.
