Philip Giraldi in The American Conservative:

"Sources say that Karl Rove is attempting to line up support to convince Vice President Dick Cheney to withdraw from the Republican ticket for "health reasons." Rove's specially commissioned surveys of voter preferences reveal that Cheney is currently hurting the ticket because of his abrasiveness and the perception that he was the driving force behind the Iraq War. ...Secretary of State Colin Powell ... has been sounded out on his willingness to ... become the vice presidential candidate if Cheney should go. Polls indicate that a Bush-Powell ticket would be an election winner. Powell reportedly indicated that he would be willing to consider the offer ...........but only if all the neoconservatives responsible for the disaster that is Iraq were to go."

I wouldn't bet on this happening.

In any case I wouldn't call it a desperate move. That would be if Bush were down 10 points in the polls, not in a dead heat and certainly not when leading in the electorial college.

BTW why would you be so happy about that? It would cement Bush's reelection and you certainly don't want that.

Not only that, Niner, but I fail to see how a move that would all but assure re-election could be labeled as "desperate". If Kerry could be guaranteed election by doing one thing, I'm sure he'd do it (I'll bet he'd even throw his medals over the White House fence!!).

However, it's not going to happen - which demonstrates how loyal and apolitical W. is. He's sticking to his principles win or lose - which is one of many reasons why he has my vote.

I'm scared of a Bush administration without Cheney. It is a scary neo-conservative place at the moment, but without Cheney calling all the shots, it would be a directionless scary neo-conservative place. Which could possibly be even worse.

It's a win-win.

The world would be a much better place with Dub sitting on Powell's knee if Kerry loses the election.

You are clearly still living in the dream world that Bush doesn't call the shots.

Bush runs the presidency and no one else.

04-bow I wanted to say the same thing myself. Why people keep underestimating Bush is beyond me...but let them have at it. No one on that staff thinks they trump the president. The only ones who believe it to be the case are the ones who are green and looking in from the outside.

The impetus would be on you to prove he's NOT running the country, or that Dick Cheney is.

I'm waiting.

Same old storry from the dims around here. Baseless accusations that come from some anti-bush blog and these kool-aid drinkers suck it down as the gospel truth.

Good try, but come back when you have some substance with those accusations!
