Sunday Night Offers Annual Meteor Treat
Fri Aug 9, 3:21 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - August's annual Perseid meteor shower will light up the sky over the Northern Hemisphere Sunday and Monday night, the NASA ( news - web sites) space agency says.

Just before dawn is usually the best time to look for the often-showy display of streaking light, caused by the Earth passing through the tail of comet Swift-Tuttle, NASA said.

The tiny pieces of comet hit the atmosphere at a speed of 132,000 mph, causing bursts of light as they burn.

I heard there are supposed to be some tonight also.

Do you all remember that huge meteor shower in the winter? I don't know if any of you go up to watch that one, but it was definetly spectacular. There were hundreds of stars falling left and right, fast and slow, far and short. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/cheers.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

The power of Mother Nature is truly amazing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/cheers.gif" />

caught some if it last night...hopoefully tonight will be a little clearer.

HOOPS, that meteor shower in the winter was SPECTACULAR! I remember going out to the UMD golf course at like 4 AM and it was just packed with people, and everyone just pointing towards the sky yelling..."THERE'S ONE"..."THERE'S ANOTHER"..."THERE'S A GOOD ONE"...etc.

Yeah DT, I couldn't see many last night either.

Tonight looks to be a bit clearer though, at one time are they supposed to be out?
