Offense shines in Clemson scrimmage

Keith Kelly and J.J. McKelvey each had 100-yard performances to lead the offense, while Eric Meekins had 10 tackles, a blocked field goal and an interception to lead the defense as Clemson concluded its first week of spring drills with its first major scrimmage.

“Overall it was a good first scrimmage,” Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. “I thought some players stood out today.”

Kelly, who redshirted last year, led all Tiger running backs with 109 yards on 13 attempts and a touchdown. Bernard Rambert, who started the scrimmage with the first-team offense, had five rushes for 29 yards. Bowden said prior to the scrimmage that Rambert would only see limited action.

“Keith Kelly ran well,” Bowden said. “We wanted to get him a lot of work after redshirting last year and he ran hard. We know what Bernard Rambert can do.”

Chad Jasmin had seven rushes for 17 yards and two rushing touchdowns, then added a third score on a 3-yard reception.

McKelvey led Clemson’ receivers with four catches for 104 yards and two scores (24 and five yards) from redshirt freshman quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. Whitehurst, who quarterbacked the second unit against the second-team defense, was 14-of-15 for 227 yards and four scores.

“Charlie Whitehurst had a good day throwing the ball against the No. 2 defense,” Bowden said. “He did everything we asked of him. J.J. McKelvey stood out among the receivers. He made those 50-50 catches today against smaller defensive backs. But, at 6-4, those are plays he can make.”

Starting quarterback Willie Simmons faced Clemson’s No. 1 defense all day and hit on 8-of-18 passes for 61 yards and a score. He completed a 48-yard scoring pass Jackie Robinson. Receiver Tony Elliot had a strong scrimmage with three catches for 64 yards, including a 28-yard score and had two rushes for 15 yards.

Meekins was the scrimmage’s defensive star while John Leake, Clemson’s leading returning tackler from last year, added 10 tackles and two sacks. Rodney Thomas had nine tackles, including a tackle for loss. Leroy Hill added two tackles for loss, as did freshman defender David Dunham.

“(Meekins) covered a lot of area, blocked a kick and had an interception. We need him to make big plays from that safety position.”

Strong safety Altroy Bodrick was at the scrimmage, but is being held out of contact this spring as he recovers from a torn ACL. Todd McClinton, who missed most of Friday’s practice due to injury, was back for the scrimmage Saturday and was credited with two tackles. McClinton is working on the defensive line after lettering as a backup tight end last year.

Clemson will practice three more times this week before taking a week off for the spring break. The spring game is April 6 at Riggs Field. It is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

UGA dons pads for first time: Georgia worked out for nearly two hours Saturday morning at the Woodruff Practice Fields, donning full pads for the first time this spring.

Bulldog coach Mark Richt has mixed feelings about the team’s first day of work with full contact.

“I’m a little disappointed,” Richt said. “It’s not that there wasn’t good contact and effort, but too many guys were unsure of themselves, too many guys didn’t look like they were going full speed. I’m not happy overall. I did see some great things, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t see the entire team get after it. I just saw a percentage of guys get after it. We don’t want to see less than 100 percent.”

Richt also commented that the number of players participating in spring drills was an issue.

“We’re extremely low on skill positions, really at every position,” Richt said. “Of course, everybody’s like that during spring practice. It’s typical spring ball depth problems. You take away the seniors (from last season), the number of banged-up players we have and the class of freshmen that aren’t here yet and it equals not a lot of depth.”

After a day off Sunday, the team will resume practice Monday afternoon.
