Sounds like it's a diplomatic ploy, more than anything.

The reporting seems to suggest Iran is simply trying to make a point. These boys will eventually be returned safely.

I've got questions for both sides, though.

CNN made a point to mention that the border is not marked, since it is on water and all.

That spin sucks. Most recreational boaters I know have GPS. These British guys didn't?

On the other hand, it is difficult to understand why Iran is so jumpy about this border. On the Detroit River, boats cross the international border all the time. No one cares. I don't believe there is even any requirement to contact the other country's immigration service unless you actually land.

So, ff these British boys strayed over the border a bit, I don't see the big deal from Iran's point of view.

Iran's problem is the IAEA condemnation (or whatever it was) of their nuclear program. Britain was part of that. This is payback or a warning.
