A fifth member of Duke's highly rated 2002 men's basketball recruiting class has received clearance to play next season, leaving the availability of one still uncertain.
Guard Sean Dockery of Chicago earned a qualifying score in his most recent attempt at the American College Testing (ACT) exam, according a weekend article in the Chicago Sun-Times.
"This is the best news that I have ever received," the newspaper quoted Dockery as saying. "Everybody in my family is excited and happy."
Dockery said he spoke with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski soon after learning of his ACT score. "He told me he was real proud of me and couldn't wait until I get down there," said Dockery, a 6-foot-3 backcourt prospect who averaged 28 points per game in his senior season at Julian High School.
Meanwhile, Duke's admissions office has yet to reinforce its earlier acceptance of 6-9, 240-pound Shelden Williams of Midwest City, Okla.
Williams was suspended from school in late January after he and two teammates faced a rape allegation in Columbus, Ohio. Although no charges were filed, the status of Williams' admission came under review by Duke.
"When a prospective student is suspended from school, university policy requires the student to submit an explanation to the director of admissions," said Chris Kennedy, Duke's associate athletics director for academics. "The admissions office has not yet notified the athletics department" as to its decision in the matter.
