Quote:The Bush administration is hinting that it could make it more difficult for Canadian goods to get into this country if Canada's Parliament moves ahead with a proposal to drop criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana.
The proposal, part of an effort to overhaul Canada's anti-drug policies, essentially would treat most marijuana smokers there the same as people who get misdemeanor traffic tickets. Violators would be ticketed and would have to pay a small fine, but they no longer would face jail time.
Two things glaringly wrong here:
1. The government meddling in free trade and commerce to "punish" another country's actions (and punishing the American consumer in the process).
2. I don't touch the stuff (pot), but I could go on and on how decriminalizing marijuana would be a good idea here. It (a) respects the choice of an individual to take a risk with his/her own body, as long as they aren't bothering anyone else and do take responsibility for their actions, (b) saves the US taxpayer tons of money on police and legal resources tracking down people inhaling doobies, (c.) avoids throwing non-violent people in cells with real criminals like murderers and rapists, and (d) cuts down on needless loss of police officers' lives.

This is true. A Bush official was actually campaigning in Canada against the law:
<a href='http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2003-05-07-canadapot-usat_x.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2003-05...apot-usat_x.htm</a>
And some Canadian lawmakers are getting ticked off, believing the U.S. shouldn't be influencing Canadian policy. And I don't blame them:

Of course, I am against this decision. If someone wants to smoke a joint, fine with me.

We should legalize pot in this country and stop flushing tax money down the drain.Just another blaring example of big gov....taxing individual behavior.Once you let a politician in your house you can't get rid of em.

I think that it should be legalized but limited, as in restricted to certain areas to keep it from spreading. Its a nasty habit that should be allowed if people want to do it, but should be contained.

Heres what we need to do. We need to make it legal in a state like North Dakota where there isn't anybody to annoy. Then the government can open up a themepark and call it something like "Pot-Land" and they can sell all the stuff they've confiscated over the years. For shows they can charge people like $5 dollars for a joint and then they walk into a room with nothing but bright lights revolving around the room and flashing on the walls. For rides, they can have something like Splash Mountain but instead of logs they can be pipes, and imagine what the Tea-Cup ride would look like. They government then could use all this money to get us out of the deficit. ITS PERFECT!
