If we didn't have a President with enough balls to rally the nation and stand up and defend this country? If we'd have just "turned the other cheek" as someone else has stated, would the attacks have stopped? IMO, they would have gotten MUCH worse. I have heard opinions expressed that we should bring all of our troops home from the various fronts of the multi-fronted campaign. Ask yourself this question, since virtually ALL of Israel's armed forces are IN Israel, have the attacks stopped against that country? One can contend that if we brought everyone home, the front WOULD be home. Civilians, and believe me on this, are just not prepared to be targeted. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines know what needs to be done and are very-well trained in "Force-Protection". I applaud them for accepting the task so that we may act like football-loving jackasses on a message board.
So I'll reiterate, where would we be if we'd have failed to act?
I will give you a few examples of inaction:
1. 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers.
2. 1996 bombing of Kobar Towers in Saudi Arabia.
3. 1998 Bombings of embassies in Tanzania and Kenya
4. 2000 terrorist attack on the USS Cole, port of Yemen.
Action(If it's called such)? Legal. Tried to find and prosecute actual bombers.
Now, I'll give you something we DID act on:
5. 2001 Planes, turned into cruise missiles, fly into the Pentagon, both Towers of the WTC, and a field in Shanksville, Pa.
Action? A de Facto declaration of war on Terrorism and EVERYONE that harbors, sponsors, or is involved with terrorists in ANY way.
I only wish Saudi Arabia was next.
Make no mistake, we ARE at war and it was declared on us. Simply trying to appease, be complacent, blame the US, etc., will only ensure the destruction of the greastest country on Earth.
....this shouldn't be a political problem. I would expect ANY damn president to act just like this. If not, they aren't fit to be county dog catcher.
