-- CHRISTENSEN’S CASE NEARING END: Slowly but surely, the incident involving Duke senior Matt Christensen at the NCAA Tournament is working its way toward a resolution.

A Duke official said Wednesday that Christensen likely will have to write a letter of apology to referee Bruce Benedict for their run-in following the Blue Devils’ 74-73 loss to Indiana in the South Region semifinals last month. Christensen, angered by the lack of a foul call in the final seconds of the loss, charged toward Benedict and had to be restrained.

The Duke official said that once Christensen has written the letter, he likely will be publicly reprimanded for his outburst by the NCAA.

N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler, who is chairman of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee, said Wednesday that a public announcement on the case likely will come out of one of the committee’s next two meetings — either two weeks from now or two months from now.

"We’ve made a decision, which Duke has 30 days to respond to," Fowler said. "As soon as we get a response from them and a chance to talk about it at a meeting, we’ll make a public announcement’

If Duke responds early, Fowler said an announcement could come out of the committee’s next meeting, set for May 7 in New Orleans. Otherwise, Fowler said an announcement likely will come out of the June 24-28 meeting in California.
