Yikes!

Never thought I'd see them lose to Louisville - regardless of the weather.

Might Rix be a little overrated and over-hyped?

How bad is the conference this year? Could this be the weakest it's been in a while?

The conference went undefeated last week and so far has done really well against teams from other BCS conferences. That's not too bad for a "down year"....

I have been keeping track of how the conferences have been doing with their OOC results and here's how the BCS conferences have fared so far (it includes last nights FSU loss):

Pac-10 34GP 26W 8L 0.765
SEC 32GP 24W 8L 0.750
Big Ten 44GP 31W 13L 0.705
Big 12 43GP 29W 14L 0.674
ACC 27GP 18W 9L 0.667
BE 23GP 15W 8L 0.652

As you can see, the ACC is 5th, which is where most people would place the conference based over the last few years. And the ACC is real close into overtaking the Big 12 in this year's OOC results.

I'm curious to know each conference's records against teams from other BCS conferences.

UNC is 1-1
NC State is 1-0
Wake is 1-0
UVa is 1-0
dook is 0-1
FSU is 1-0 (?)
Tech is 1-0 (?)
Clemson is 0-1 (?)
Maryland is 0-0 (?)

I know I missed some, but the ACC's record is something like 6-3 against teams from other BCS conferences. That's not too bad....

I wonder as well. I didn't keep tabs on "BCS-only" OOC games.

According to the media, every player FSU recruits is the most talented player in the country at his position.

NC State has feasted on patsy and beat a mediocre Texas Tech team in OT.

Wake lost to Northern Illinois.

UVA's South Carolina win is looking less impressive, as USC struggled to beat a very bad Vandy team.

Hey, I'm an ACC fan, but I don't think things look too great.

Then again, the SEC has had its troubles as well.

We certainly played poorly in the Miami game... but if Miami's offensive line was so "dominating," then why did we stop them five times in a row at the goal line?

Miami dominated time of possession because we kept giving the ball back to them. Our defense got worn down because they couldn't take a break -- we couldn't hold onto the ball long enough for that.

The defense played their butts off in that game and kept us in it with stellar play the entire first half, and most of the second. If we had hung onto the ball enough to get some sustained drives going, they wouldn't have gotten "dominated" so much.

Meanwhile, it was basically the exact opposite this past game against Georgia Tech. The defense couldn't stop a thing Tech was doing (especially on third down)... and they were the main liability for us.

Miami also turned the ball over three times, remember.

As far as the O-line is concerned, of course we had trouble in the red zone. There is a big difference, as you know, blocking on the goal line. However, we drove the ball right down your throats in the second half -- Miami hardly threw a pass. Bunting was running all kinds of people into the LB spot to try and stop the run. Bunting even made comments in his post-game show about the difficulty UNC had stopping the run.

And this shouldn't be a big shock -- you guys have a lot of youth on defense.

I believe Miami only had 2 turnovers -- both on fumbles -- compared to 9 for us. That's still a differential of 7, which is ludicrous.

It seems as though all those turnovers were either as our offense was about to score, or deep in our own terrority. In the latter situations, our defense had to step it up just to keep Miami to field goals (made or missed) and on that goal line stand. They deserve some kind of award just for stopping Miami five times at the goal line after Durant coughed it up in their red zone.

Once again, Miami's offense wore down our defense in the second half because they were on the field the entire first half practically. They had the ball an entire quarter more than we did. In the fourth quarter, Miami was able to make some more sustained drives because our D was exhausted. That may say something about their conditioning, but you can only ask so much of a group (especially when the offense is giving the ball away left and right). Still, they stepped it up and kept us in the game until the very end.

I'm not denying that they are a young group and that they've struggled a lot this year. But, I think the Miami game was a good game for our defense.

As I said, the Tech game wasn't.

You're right.

Miami fumbled 4 times, but only lost the ball twice.

And I would agree that the Tech offensive line played extremely well against you guys. There were holes you could have driven a truck through.

Also, there were a lot of mental errors for UNC. I expected to see Bunting's team a lot more disciplined.

UNC might be a team that gets better as the season goes on.

We usually get a top-5 in recruiting, but we don't always get the most talented players in the country. And just because someone is good in high school doesn't mean they can compete in college. Some players can't stand the fact that they can't play as freshmen. Eric Shelton, rb, was one of those players. He left FSU and now plays for Louisville.
