This is the underlying question...

If SJU can beat Duke, why can't Michigan State? Oklahoma? Florida State? NC State? Clemson? Virginia? Davidson? Miami?

St. John's can't even beat Hofstra, Niagara, St. Francis and other mid-majors.

you should know -unless you're too much of a hippie- that one game has no relation to another.

OK, I am now completely convinced that you don't know much about college basketball.

You calling me a hippie is like me calling you a fascist, by the way.

In case you didn't know, Swoosh, Shelden Williams is averaging 18.4 ppg, 10.6 rpg and 3.4 bpg.
You better double team him or you're in for a long night.

Oh, and if you do double team him, you're bound to leave either Redick (22.4 ppg) or Daniel Ewing (14.8 ppg) open.

Containing 3 of the best 12 players in the ACC is not nearly as easy as you think.

shelden williams is awesome. i can't disagree with that. in fact, i think he will be better in the pros than he is in college. he has an NBA body, good post moves, and in the best rebounder in the country. i just think lamont hamilton can contain him. but if you think SJU can't compete with Duke IN the Garden, then you are obviously way too biased towards Duke. that has always been your biggest problem. you can never admit it when other teams are better than Duke.

Dude, the Gardens is almost like another home for Duke. And OS has already stated that UNC is a better team than Duke, and I'm sure he's named others. Realize that Duke is gonna beat SJ because SJ can't shut down all of Duke's weapons. They aren't gonna win a shooting contest, so simply containing them won't do.

Yeah, I agree with TMonay. Madison Square Garden is almost like playing at home for Duke. Why do you think all of us Duke fans want them to get the East Regional in the NCAA Tournament? For the majortity of time, people in those arenas are going to be Duke fans. The whole east coast is basically Duke country, even someplace like NYC. Either people in those states either like Duke already or the Cameron Crazies travel there.

We flat out *suck* without Elder and/or Smith. That should be not much of a surprise, as ANYBODY in the Top 40 has either beaten us or destroyed us this season.

We might not make the NCAA tourney, at the current rate.

I think so. Maybe back in the day when they could and did actually beat us (i.e. Eric Barkley), more St. John's fans would show up. But not now. Even if that many Duke fans DON'T show up, they are so used to playing in MSG that I don't think it'll really be a factor.

duke plays in MSG 1 or 2 times/year. SJU plays over 10 times/year. and now that SJU is playing tough against every team, their fan base will begin to grow again.

That's a shame though. Their fan base should be there regardless. It shouldn't have to "show up" again when they've begun to improve.

You're assuming that SJ stays this competitive. They still have nine games before they face Duke, three of which are against top 25 teams. People don't come out just because a team "stays competitive". They come out to see their team win.

living in NC your whole life, you don't understand the fans in NY. if their SJ's team is exciting, they will pay to see them. fans in NY aren't like the fans in NC, especially those crappy UNC fans.

you're very right. it is sad. that douchebag, mike jarvis, set this program back 3-5 years.

but the fans will start showing up. we crushed state, we were competitive with syracuse, we lost to WVA on the road by like 4, we lost by 1 at notre dame, we lost by 6 to an undefeated BC team, and we beat Pitt, who beat UConn on the road last night (so if nate's theory is correct, SJU is better than UConn, because we beat pitt).

First of all, I don't buy into that transitive property related to sports garbage. I never said that. My point was that St. John's can't even beat 4 or 5 mid-majors. That shows how mediocre they are. How often does a mediocre team beat the #2 team in the country?

I guarantee you there will be more Duke fans at MSG than St. John's fans. There always are, and I went to the game there a couple years ago. NYC is a haven for Duke fans... and people travel from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and other places to watch Duke at the Garden.

And I think there are plenty of teams better than Duke this season... Wake, UNC, Kansas, Illinois and I'm sure there are others. Why should I think that St. John's is better than Duke? Just because you said so, and so if I disagree, I'm now arrogant and stubborn?

SJU - LOST 4 OUT OF THEIR LAST 5 GAMES!

And you think fans are gonna show up for a 7-8 team that can't even beat NIAGARA????

You highly underestimate how many rich Duke alums live in NYC.

ok, let's get one thing straight. there are more SJU fans then duke fans in NYC. i've been to way more games at the garden then you will ever be at, so don't even go there. secondly, those losses at the beginning of the year mean nothing now. i guarantee you if we played niagara, illinois st., and hofstra now, we would blow them out.

they might've lost 4 of their last 5, but in thier last 6 games, they have played 5 ranked teams, and notre dame in south bend. all of those teams are deeper than Duke.
