Here's an article about the ACC bowl situation from the Atl. Journal Constitution...
Quote:[ The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 11/18/02 ]
Virginia's victory on Saturday over fading North Carolina State has scrambled the ACC bowl race.
The Cavaliers' victory threw a major wrinkle into the holiday planning of the other six teams vying for the league's six bowl slots. Many teams, Georgia Tech included, had hoped to have a better feel for where they might end up after last weekend's games.
But now that the ACC is likely to have more bowl- eligible teams than bowl tie-ins, there's more uncertainty than ever before.
Tech could play in the inaugural Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte on Dec. 28, the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando on Dec. 23 or a non- ACC bowl, such as the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, or the Silicon Valley Bowl in San Jose, Calif., both on New Year's Eve.
"Who knows?" Tech athletics director Dave Braine asked rhetorically. "Nothing will be decided for a little while. Obviously, we've talked about everything."
ACC teams conclude regular-season play Nov. 30, with Tech at Georgia, Wake Forest at Maryland, Virginia at Virginia Tech and Florida State hosting Florida. It's possible that none of the league's bowl matchups will be known before then.
The ACC champion is guaranteed a berth in a Bowl Championship Series bowl. The Gator Bowl picks next, followed by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, the Tangerine Bowl, the Continental Tire Bowl and the Seattle Bowl.
Tech played in the Seattle Bowl a year ago and is unlikely to go there again. The Peach Bowl is also a longshot because Tech played in it two years ago.
The Yellow Jackets (7-4, 4-4 ACC) seemed a good bet for the Continental Tire Bowl or the Tangerine Bowl before last weekend. But Virginia's win guaranteed the Cavs (7-4, 5-2) a winning record and attracted the Tangerine Bowl's notice. Bowl officials who had been looking at Tech and Clemson (6-5, 4-4) are now giving Virginia serious consideration.
Tech, Clemson and N.C. State (9-3, 4-3) are the most likely candidates for the Continental Tire Bowl, said Ken Haines, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of parent company Raycom Sports. Virginia and Wake Forest have an outside shot, Haines said.
"Certainly Georgia Tech is on our radar," he said.
Clemson finishes its season Saturday against South Carolina. Win or lose, the Tigers are bowl-eligible.
"We're not counting any team out right now, but a West Virginia matchup against maybe a Clemson would be an easy game for us to market to our viewers," Continental Tire Bowl coordinator George Johnson told the Roanoke (Va.) Times Nov. 9.
Wake Forest (5-5, 3-4) figures to become the league's seventh bowl-eligible team this weekend by beating 1-9 Navy.
