.

I'd like to comment on that, but I won't. oldmangrizz? you're up.

You don't even want to get me started about strip clubs. That would require an entirely new thread, and, I suspect, wouldn't be long before it was either moved or deleted altogether.

I think they won an MTV basement tapes award, or came close. If you've never seen this, it's funny as hell.

The correct answer is "came close". I'm the drummer in that video and played the only live gig DP ever did at Soloman Alfred's. Self-incrimination.

The other two original (as in on the first album) Target guys are David Spain on drums and Buddy Davis on guitar.

You're the drummer in the "Dog Police" video?

Bob Westbrook was Sunshine's vocal coach from 5-10 years old then we switched over to Performing Arts in Germantown and Cindy Barrett. Bob's a tiger fan.

I don't have time to read three pages on this thread, so sorry
if this is rehash but my favorites were.....

OMAHA. Early 70's. Covered alot of Allman Brothers, some Neil
Young. They had a 20 year old kid singing lead. Eveyone said,
"Damn! That kid's good." Turned out to be Jimi Jamison.

Obviously TARGET has been mentioned. David Spain on drums, Tommy
Cathey on bass, Buddy Davis and Paul Cannon on guitars, and Jimi
on vocals before he went to COBRA, then he took off to SURVIVOR.

Other favorites were SOUTHERN CREED, later CREED. Primaraly a
Bartlett High group. Chip Thomas/Drums, (class of '73), Hal Butler/
Keyboards-Vocals, (class of '71), Luther Maben/guitar, (class of '72).
They picked up a Raleigh-Egypt guy named James Flynn/bass, and a incredible guitar playing kid from Trezvant named Steve Ingle. Jim Russendorf later replaced Maben.

ZUIDER ZEE. I guess my favorite. Gary Simon/Drums, John Bonar/Bass, Kim Foreman/Keyboards and Richard Orange/Guitar.
Most of the guys were from Lafayette, La.
Orange wrote Cindy Lauper's hit......"All the way to China."
They had an amazing sound, (miked everything and mixed perfect),
considering the day.

This is totally amazing that so many remember Zuider Zee. Kim was the love of my life  (at the time). Back in the day, when I co-habitated with them, the drummer, Gary, would fix us his famous french onion soup for dinner every single night (he was French). Of course we were all poor starving hippies at the time.....to this day I won't touch onion soup. I have some very cool pictures of them back then....oh the memories.....

My two cents....
is bias laden due to having spent over a decade with Jimmy Hart and the Gentrys. The bands have always been great here but the lack of management and common sense by the players have hampered the chances of real success nationally and internationally. As a Memphis musician you can travel an ywhere in the world and work strictly based on your resume as being a player from here. I know, firsthand of that, and feel blessed by that fact. Having been on both Stax and Sun, as well as MGM, I know of the great days of the past. Any genre you name has a wealth of top tier talent but several come to mind right now. Lucero...deserves a record deal by a major label, if no other reason than Ric Steff is the keyboard in that group. Steve Reid...best solo act in this town for years and stiill is and can be seen on Beale Street in several bars every week. Coon Elder...way ahead of his time and had Brenda Patterson who still can sing with the best of them. Someone mentioned the infamous Count Taco and the Upsetters and they pretty much were a blues band with great players and no desire to work, lol. Those guys are pals and several work now in the Eric Hughes Band. The old Blues Alley Blues Band was really special and I miss them because they were the real deal. Target, Creed, and Reba are all great examples of the immense talent here. As for myself, I feel blessed to have been a part of the local secene here and been successful. Right now, I am in an all balck R & B band called the Soul Outsiders and we are on Beale virtually every Friday and Sunday at Silky's plus I work inside there on Monday's as part of the Memphis Trio and we are working on a CD with a local girl who is close to a deal with Sony. You can't go wrong anywhere you go to listen to live music in this city and I urge all to try to keep supporting this scene.

georgiatiger Wrote:Just curious. Obviously, I haven't lived there in a while and have no idea what's going on these days. One of my fondest memories of Memphis is the music. When I'm in town, I try to see 2 Mule Plow because I know several of the guys. They often play at one Huey's or another on Sunday, so it's easy for me to see them. I'm curious as who else I should try and see next time I'm in town. My tastes are all over the board.

http://www.2muleplow.com

2 Mule Plow will perform this Friday

May 4th, 2007

@ 7:00pm

for the Bartlett Bluegrass Festival

@ the Bartlett Performing Arts Center

on Appling Road 1/4 mi. from Summer Ave/Hwy70

Admission is FREE!

Vendors will be there for BBQ, drinks hot dogs, etc.

Bring a lawn chair and a blanket. If weather permits the performance

will be outside next to the lake. The first group begins at 6pm.

Danny Smythe was the original drummer. I don't believe Boggs joined until around 68', sometime after 'The Letter'.
My father was frends and a classmate of Jonny Evans, and he introduced me to him in the music store Jonny was working at some 25 years ago. Later, he told me that he was a member of the Box Tops. I said "who?". He said "you know, The Letter". He told me Jonny played key boards or guitar for the Box Tops, but it was so long ago that I can't remember which. Can anyone help me out?
