All-Time Favorite Memphis Bands
Just curious. Obviously, I haven't lived there in a while and have no idea what's going on these days. One of my fondest memories of Memphis is the music. When I'm in town, I try to see 2 Mule Plow because I know several of the guys. They often play at one Huey's or another on Sunday, so it's easy for me to see them. I'm curious as who else I should try and see next time I'm in town. My tastes are all over the board.

There was a band called The Trust I used to see years ago at TJ Mulligans who were really good and Kings Trio. I don't know if any of them are still playing or not.

W.C. Handy and the group with which he recorded "Memphis Blues" and "Yellow Dog". Handy, with his formal music education, was the first to urbanize Blues and his music gained world-wide popularity. UofM should capitalize on his music and play it frequently at all sporting events. People can hear pop music anytime - we should give them something unique and relevant to MEMPHIS!

What about the Bar-Kays and Con Funk Shun. Both have deep Memphis roots and had lots of hit records.

From 1961 til about 1965......Tommy Burke and the Counts

Also during that era, The Bowlegs Miller Band

I really didn't get to see many Memphis bands play with any regularity after late 65 as I also played music and was working all the time.

And I left Memphis in 1977

Somewhere on the list should be the great rhythm section of Booker T and the MG's

Early 80's I saw a band several times and loved them....Suzanne Jerome and the Breaks

If you liked River Bluff Clan, you'll love 2 Mule Plow. A couple of those guys helped form the foundation of the group.

Keith Sykes was awesome. Made me think of Larry Rasberry and the Highsteppers. Same era.

wow. i hadn't thought about some of those groups in, pretty much, forever. reba and the portables will always hold a special spot. i took my mom downtown (on her birthday) after she retired, to see them in the park. she talks about it to this day. still claims that it was the best birthday she ever had.

If you are into more of a Folk Rock sound The Central Standards are very good. They always put on a great show.

http://www.centralstandards.com/

They are featured on a CD of all memphis musicians that benefit Target House and it can be bought at this location:

http://www.vexarentertainment.com/cd.html

Please pick up a copy, it goes to a great cause!

Who was the band that had that guitarist, Shawne Lane (I think that was his name)? That guy was as good as they got.

Tora Tora was indeed Great. Anthony Corder had skyscraper vocals.

The banishment of Tora Tora & others like that from the airwaves in the early 90's was a shame. I understand it was a backlash against the glam of groups like Poison, but to throw them all out was when I quit listening to new music. Sorry, I just never wanted to move to Seattle, stop bathing, put on flannel, and then whine about how hard life is and how much I hate my father.

Four more:
Big Fish
Xavion
Southern Creed/Creed
Roxy Blue
