You guys got a good one here. This kid can flat play.
While not a major upset, most folks thought GW would win easily.

Cadets win showdown
Hamilton, Osby pace Benedictine

No. 2 beat No. 1.

"It's breath taking. It's something we knew we could accomplish," Benedictine point guard Vernon Hamilton said after the Cadets, ranked No. 2 in The Times-Dispatch Prep Poll, defeated top-ranked George Wythe 77-62 last night in a quarterfinal game of The Times-Dispatch inSync Tournament.

Whether the Cadets (5-0) will ascend to No. 1 depends on how they fare the remainder of the tournament. They meet the winner of the Prince George-Varina game in the scheduled 8:30 p.m. semifinal at the University of Richmond's Robins Center tomorrow night.

Before a packed house (about 200 spectators were turned away), the Cadets needed and used all their weapons to beat the Bulldogs (3-1). Four players, led by Hamilton's 24, scored in double figures. Bambale Osby had 19, and Matt Murrer and Reid Augst added 13 each.

"We have good pieces. We just have to keep putting them together," Benedictine coach Bruce Croxton said.

Osby, a 6-7 mass of activity inside, grabbed 11 rebounds and played a major role in rendering Wythe's 6-9 Shawn Taggart ineffective. Taggart had three fouls in the first half and fouled out with 6:55 left in the game with nine points.

"We knew when Taggart picked up his third foul we had to go to Bambale," Hamilton said. "They had to bring in a smaller defender. That opened it up for him, and it opened up the lane for me."

Said George Wythe coach Franklin McMillian, "The foul situation hurt tremendously because we're not normally in that situation even though we press."

The Bulldogs looked very much like the No. 1 team when they broke from the gate quickly and led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.

"That's the first time we've been jumped on so early this season," Croxton said. "We didn't stress about, and little by little we got back in the game."

The Cadets took advantage of poor shooting by the Bulldogs and Taggart's absence. Nick Hunter, who started for the first time this season, had the chore of shadowing Wythe's high-scoring Tyree Evans.

"That was the game plan. I knew I had to shut him down, and I did what I had to do," Hunter said. "Our defense was tremendous."

Evans had to work for every one of his 16 points. He hit one 3-pointer and was off target from the perimeter all night. He fouled out late in the game.

Hunter also contributed two 3-pointers in the third quarter when the Cadets broke away from 26-all at halftime. Osby scored nine points and Hamilton five as Benedictine built a 49-42 lead going into the last quarter. The Bulldogs hung around because Anthony Greene scored nine of his 16 points in the third.

While the Bulldogs turned their attention to Hamilton and Osby, Augst stepped to the forefront in the fourth quarter. He scored 11 points (three field goals and 5 of 7 from the foul line). Back-to-back field goals midway through the quarter shut off any threat of a Wythe comeback.

"We found out we have to play better defense," McMillian said. "I'm more disappointed with our effort than I am with losing. We need players to step up against teams like this who come ready to play."

The Bulldogs lost only four times the past two seasons, and the earliest of those was in the last third of last season until last night.

"Maybe we needed a loss to know whether we can come back," McMillian said.
