Game 2 - Saturday 3/4/06
Quote:Fifteen Run Fifth Inning Highlights No. 6 FSU's 21-5 Win Over Brown

Malone ties NCAA record with two homers in one inning and Rye drives in five runs.

March 4, 2006

Tallahassee, FL - There were a lot of storylines in No. 6 Florida State's21-5 win over Brown Saturday. There was Ryne Malone's NCAA record-tying two homeruns in an inning. You had Dennis Guinn extend his streak of games with a hit and an RBI to 10. Then there was Barret Browning (3-0) pitching five innings of one run ball but nothing can overshadow what took place in the fifth. FSU sent 20 batters to the plate, recorded 10 hits, batted around twice and scored 15 runs, the second-most in an inning in school history. The 15-run fifth highlighted FSU's (13-1) victory over Brown (0-2) in the second game of the series Saturday.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Seminoles recorded 10 of their 17 hits. Four players had multiple hits in the inning alone and Buster Posey and Tony Thomas, Jr. each had three at bats in the wild fifth. The record for runs scored by an FSU team in one inning was 16 and that was set by clubs in the 1982 and 1992 seasons.

"It is funny (associate head coach) Jamey (Shouppe) was on that 1982 club and I turned to him when we had about 12 runs and said this reminded me of '82," said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin. "We hit a bunch of homeruns in that game too. I was just very pleased with how this ball club came out ready to play today."

The star of the fifth inning had to be Malone. The junior, who missed just his fourth game in 155 possible games due to an illness Friday, came back strong going 3-for-4 with a triple, two homeruns, three RBIs and two runs scored. He is the first player in the NCAA to hit two homers in an inning since 2004 and the first Seminole to do since Ryan Barthelemy did it versus FAMU in 2002.

"The rest yesterday definitely helped out," said Malone of his performance. "My main goal was to go out and have fun and enjoy the guys. After being sick and missing a game, I haven't missed too many ballgames I just really don't want to take anything for granted. It was really nice to get out there today.

"It is a great honor (getting in the NCAA record book). Our whole team did a great job today."

There were plenty of stars at the plate Saturday for FSU. Danny Diaz broke open a 1-1 game with a two-run single that started the 15-run fifth. Guinn hit his fifth homer of the year and knocked in four more runs. Shane Robinson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs but it was Jack Rye that led the way. The sophomore hit his fourth and fifth homers and led the team with five RBIs.

"I saw a couple good pitches today," said Rye when asked about his performance. "Shane, myself and a couple other guys have been getting pitched around lately. We just had to stay patient and today I got a couple pitches down the middle and I took advantage of it."

Brown starter Shaun McNamara (0-1) kept FSU at bay through three innings allowing just one hit, a bunt single by Tony Thomas, Jr. Robinson beat out an infield single in the fourth and moved up to third on a ground out and a passed ball. Guinn then drove in his 18th RBI tying the game at 1-1.

Through the first four innings the game seemed to be a pitcher's duel. The team's had combined for just six hits, only two by Seminoles, and two runs. Browning and McNamara had settled into a groove or so it seemed.

"Their pitcher was doing really well and once we got to the fifth inning we had to step it up," said Rye. "We had a couple of breaks and that turned into a huge inning."

"It is a crazy game," said Martin. "Their guy was going right through us. He was quick to the plate. He was spotting the ball very well. We got into the fifth inning and got a couple good at bats. Buster Posey led off with a single. All of a sudden a ball is misplayed up the middle and good clubs take advantage of mistakes. Never in my wildest of dreams did I think we would turn it into a 15 run inning but we really did take advantage of some mistakes that were made. It is a credit to our young men and I am very proud of the way they played again today."

The Seminoles started to figure out McNamara in the bottom of the fifth. Posey led off with a single and Thomas followed by drawing a walk. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and then Diaz brought both home on a single to center giving FSU the 3-1 lead, its first of the game. Diaz moved to second on a ground out and then to third on Robinson's second hit of the game. FSU continued to build on its lead as a chopper over the pitcher was misplayed and Diaz come home to score the fourth run. Guinn then did what he has been doing all season. The sophomore jacked his fifth homer of the year putting FSU in front 7-1 on the three-run shot. Malone followed with another homer, his third of the year, as the lead grew to 8-1. It was the first back-to-back homers by Seminoles since May 19, 2005. The Seminoles eventually loaded the bases versus the third Brown pitcher of the afternoon and a Charles Cleveland walk forced in the ninth run and the eighth of the inning. A passed ball allowed Thomas to come in and then Robinson doubled driving in two more runs making it a 12-1 game. Rye followed by hitting the third homerun of the frame, this one a two-run shot. After an error would have ended the inning, Malone got back to the plate and made Brown pay with his second shot of the inning, this one a two-run homer.

"That was a great inning," said Rye. "A lot of it came with two outs and we kept fighting. Nobody wanted to make the last out and it just shows how deep our line-up is."

After the fifth inning took what was seemed to be nearly an hour, Browning did not return for the sixth. The junior picked up his third straight win as he gave up just one run and six hits. He issued only one walk and fanned five batters.

"Barret Browning pitched very well in the five innings he was out there," said Martin. "He really spotted his pitches well. He had his curveball and change-up going. Brown is not a bad baseball team. They just made a couple of mistakes we took advantage of."

Sunday's series finale will be played at 12:00 p.m. That game was moved up from 1:00 p.m. due to travel restrictions for the Bears. All three Sunday home games in March will now be played at 12:00 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled times of 1:00. Game 3 - Sunday 3/5/06
Quote:No. 6 FSU Continues To Roll Completing Series Sweep Of Brown 15-7
Seminoles up win streak to 11 games and home win streak to 22 thanks to sweep of Brown.

March 5, 2006

Tallahassee, FL - The sixth-ranked FSU baseball team continued to flex its offensive muscle Sunday. For the third straight game the Seminoles (14-1) scored double digit runs as they beat Brown (0-3) by a score of 15-7 to complete the series sweep. Florida State hit seven homeruns in the series, totaled 21 extra bases, hit .418 and slugged .773 in the set. Brent Marsh (1-0) picked up the win in relief in the finale as FSU upped its win streak to 11 games and has now won 22 straight games at Mike Martin Field. Brown starter Jeff Dietz (0-1) took the loss.

"This weekend was a confidence booster for everyone in our line-up," said Jack Rye who hit three homers in the series and now leads the squad with six. "This shows how deep we are. Everyone contributed this weekend. Hopefully that will continue as we get ready for ACC play."

"I am very pleased with this baseball team," said FSU Head Coach Mike Martin. "We got it done today. Our team did not take Brown lightly. Heck, they scored six runs against the guy who beat the number one team in the country just four days ago. I was pleased with the approach we took."

Florida State once again got a big inning Sunday. On Saturday it was a near record 15 runs in the fifth. Today the Seminoles scored seven in the bottom of the fourth in answering Brown's six-run top of the inning. FSU drew five walks in the frame, got extra base hits from Shane Robinson and Dennis Guinn and singles from Tony Thomas and Charles Cleveland in reclaiming the lead after the Bears evened the game 6-6.

"We had 15 runs in an inning yesterday and seven today," said Guinn. "We just came out and they made some mistakes, some bad pitches and we made them pay for it. We did a good job of taking back control of the game."

Guinn had a monster series for FSU. The reigning ACC Player of the Week hit .667, slugged 1.444, had an on base percentage of .692 and drove in nine runs. He scored five times, had two doubles, a triple and a homerun. He will enter Tuesday night's game versus Mercer with a streak of 11 straight games with a hit and an RBI.

Guinn wasn't alone though as Rye was huge for FSU as well. The right fielder not only hit three homeruns and posted a slugging percentage of 1.500 but he drew a team-leading six walks as well. Together Rye and Guinn hit .529 with 11 runs, two doubles, one triple, four homers, 17 RBIs and nine walks.

"This year I am being a lot more aggressive," said Rye. "I am taking it slow, one at bat at a time. I am looking for my pitch to hit. If they don't throw it, I am not going to swing."

After throwing 106 pitches in a win over then-No. 1 Florida Tuesday night, Tyler Chambliss did not factor into the decision Sunday. The junior started a little slow in the first Sunday start of his career throwing five straight balls to open the game. The junior rebounded nicely though with seven strikes in his next eight pitches and getting out of the first inning unscathed.

Robinson then did what he does best as he led off the bottom of the first with a walk, moved to second on a balk and came in on Guinn's team-leading 22nd RBI.

The Bears threatened to tie the game in the third. After Chambliss retired the first batter, two walks, an infield single and an error loaded the bases with two away in the inning. The Seminole hurler once again got out of the jam and kept FSU in front 1-0.

Robinson reached base again leading off an inning, this time the bottom of the third. The All-American then came trotting home on a two-run blast by Rye, his team-leading sixth of the year. It was the sixth HR of the series up to that point, half of which were hit by Rye. The hits kept coming for FSU as Guinn followed with a single and then moved to third on a Ryne Malone double. Both runners came in on another extra base hit as Buster Posey ripped a triple to deep left center. It was the first triple of Posey's career.

Brown used the long ball to help its cause in the fourth. After Chambliss put the leadoff runner on for the third time, Brown's Dan Shapiro hit the first homerun of the season for the Bears. It was just the second homer hit by an FSU opponent and the first allowed all year by a Seminole starting pitcher. The two-run shot narrowed the gap to 6-2. An error and a base hit kept Brown alive in the top of the fourth with runners on the corners and two away. Chambliss' career-high fifth walk loaded the bases and then a two-run single by Danny Hughes made it a 6-4 ball game. Another walk loaded the bases yet again and ended the day for the FSU starter. Marsh came in and proceeded to give up a two-run single tying the game.

Florida State came right back in the bottom of the fourth. Three walks loaded the bases for Posey as he stepped in against new pitcher Rob Hallberg. Hallberg walked in the lead run making the score 7-6 then Thomas brought in two more on a two-run single as Florida State went back in front 9-6. Cleveland beat out an infield single pushing two more runs home as FSU scored in double digits for the third straight game in the series. Robinson made it a 12-6 game as he tripled for the first time this year driving in Cleveland. Guinn continued his torrid hitting as the sophomore knocked in another run on a double and improved to 3-for-3 on the day.

The homeruns kept coming for FSU in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan McArdle led off the bottom of the inning with the first homer of his FSU career. It was the seventh homer of the series for FSU, which equaled the team's total through 14 games last season.

In the bottom of the sixth, Cleveland recorded his second hit of the game while Jack Rye and Guinn each drew a walk loading the bases. Malone drove in run number 15 on a sac fly. The game was called in the bottom of the seventh due to travel restrictions.

The Seminoles will host another group of Bears, this time it will be Mercer University. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 7 at 6:00 p.m. This is the first of the "Two For Tuesday" games where $2 will get you a ticket to any regular season Seminole game played on a Tuesday. Game Tracker will be available for every game this season along with a live radio broadcasts available on WFLA locally and free on the Internet at seminoles.com.
