Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steely Dan, alternative-pop hitmakers Counting Crows and R&B legend Bobby "Blue" Bland are among the more than 60 acts that will perform at the 31st annual Beale Street Music Festival May 4-6.
The music fest, the first major event of the monthlong Memphis in May International Festival, historically has featured talent across a wide array of genres. This year's event will include sets by Grammy-winning Australian hard-rock band Wolfmother, contemporary soul man John Legend, British singer-songwriter Corrine Bailey Rae, and "American Idol" alum Chris Daughtry's group DAUGHTRY, among others.
The lineup will be announced during a news conference today at the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street. A full list of artists scheduled for the three-day event will be available at memphisinmay.org and at commercialappeal.com after 2 p.m.
The roster of talent for the 2007 festival will feature numerous Memphis-connected performers, including rappers Three 6 Mafia with Project Pat, who will also perform a solo set. Sun Records perennials Jerry Lee Lewis and Billy Lee Riley will appear, as will modern roots eclectics North Mississippi Allstars and guitar great Alvin Youngblood Hart.
The festival's Blues Tent this year will feature veterans David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Koko Taylor and Hubert Sumlin, and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. Relative newcomer Watermelon Slim, who is up for six Blues Music Awards, will also appear.
The festival began on Beale in 1977 and moved to Tom Lee Park in 1990.
Music festival organizers say attendance for last year's event hovered around the 118,000 mark, down from an all-time high of 165,000 in 2002.
The Memphis in May International Festival -- which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the Sunset Symphony, and an international cultural exchange -- this year honors Spain.
