Texas running back Cedric Benson, the Big 12 freshman of the year last season, was arrested on misdemeanor drug and alcohol possession charges.

Benson was charged Saturday with possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana under 2 ounces, and with being a minor in possession of alcohol, police said Monday. Police responded to a call about loud music at a Midland apartment.

Benson, 19, was taken to the Midland County Central Detention Center and released after posting $1,365 that morning.

Texas coach Mack Brown said he couldn't comment on the arrest and charges, but called Benson ``a great young man who we've really enjoyed having in our program.''

Brown said he talked with Benson and added that the case ``will be handled within our family.''

If convicted on the marijuana possession charge, Benson faces up to a $2,000 fine and six months in jail. The other charges carry up to a $500 fine each.

Benson set a Longhorns freshman record last season when he gained 1,053 yards on 223 carries and scored 12 touchdowns. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and is expected to play baseball in the minor leagues this summer.

And I was a big Major Applewhite fan over the last 3-4 years. When Chris Simms was in there, I pulled against the Horns. I thought Major got shafted...no way he should've lost his starting job. He proved what kind of QB he was by almost bringing them back against Colorado in the Big 12 Championship game and did lead them back against Washington in the Holiday Bowl.

Benson update. The DMN was reporting this morning that Benson's lawyer states the police had no probable cause and that he had been at the place approximately 20 minutes before the cops showed up. Sounds like Cedric might walk or the charges will fall on the person who lived at the apartment. I would provide a link, but I'm sure this is old news to Horn fans.

I think he'll still get stuck with a MIP though, but that's not a big deal. Everybody gets one of those.
