Seminoles slam the the Cavaliers
by Drew Hankin

Florida State opened up ACC play with a 9-1 win over the Virginia Cavaliers at Howser Stadium on Friday in front of 2,832 fans. Seminole batters pounded out four homeruns against Cavalier pitchers as Chris Hart hit a grand slam, Stephen Drew hit a 2-run blast, and Eddy Martinez-Esteve homered twice.

FSU pitchers were nearly untouchable once again, as Matt Lynch (6-0) picked up his sixth win of the season, allowing only one run on six hits in 6.2 innings while walking two and striking out seven batters. Rhett James also pitched 1.1 innings of middle-relief, and Eddie Cannon struck out the side in the ninth inning to end the game.

Drew led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right and promptly stole his nineteenth base of the season. Tony McQuade then drew a walk before Tony Richie reached on an infield single to load the bases. After a rare bases-loaded strikeout by Jerrod Brown (who fell to just 17 of 21 with the bases loaded), Hart crushed the ball over the wall in left for the grand slam. Martinez-Esteve followed that up with back-to-back shot of his home to centerfield that gave the Seminoles a 5-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, Brown reached on a walk, moved to second on a single by Hart, and scored on anothert single by Blake Balkcom making it 6-0 in favor of FSU.

UVA's only run of the game came in the top of the fifth when thirdbaseman Ryan Zimmerman singled to left, leftfielder Tom Hagan reached on a bunt-single, and catcher Scott Headd walked to load the bases. Zimmerman would eventually score on a fielder's choice that cut the Seminole lead to 6-1. Florida State got that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Martinez-Esteve hit his second homerun of the game and fourth on the season to put the Noles up 7-1.

In the eighth inning, Matt Sauls singled before Drew put an exclamation point on the win with his third homerun of the season, a shot over the fence in rightfield that made it 9-1.

FSU improved to 22-2 and 1-0 in ACC play on the season while the Cavaliers fell to 9-6 and 0-1. The same two teams play again on Saturday at 6:00 with Trent Peterson (3-0 2.03) on the mound for the Seminoles against Mike Ballard (0-1 1.76) ERA) for Virginia.

Peterson and Hodges shut out the Cavs
by Drew Hankin

Trent Peterson and Daniel Hodges combined for FSU's fourth shutout of the season, a 4-0 win over Virginia in front of 3,958 fans on Saturday night. Peterson (4-0), who didn't allow a single runner past second base, picked up the win with eight innings and Daniel Hodges moved up to 10th in ACC History with 104 appearances over his four-year career.

Florida State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tony McQuade led off with a double down the left field line before moving to third on a ground out. After Jerrod Brown was hit by a pitch, Chris Hart doubled in both runs with a liner down the leftfield line that gave the Noles a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Seminoles doubled that score when Brown and Hart both walked before Eddy Martinez-Esteve singled up the middle to one run. Hart then moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on an error by the UVA catcher.

Florida State is now 23-2 on the season, and 2-0 in the ACC while Virginia fell to 9-7 and 0-2 in conference play. The Noles go for the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 with Daniel Davidson (2-0, 0.75) on the mound against Chris Gail (1-1, 3.78) for the Cavaliers. The game will be shown live on the Sunshine Network.

FSU sweeps Virginia in extra innings
by Drew Hankin

It took twelve innings, but Florida State extended it's ACC-home winning streak to twenty-nine games with a 5-4 win over the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday to complete the three-game sweep in front of 2,858 fans at Dick Howser Stadium. That home game winning streak dates all the way back to April 29th of 2000. FSU has also won twenty-three straight games against ACC opponents dating back to April 19th of 2002.

Daniel Davidson started the game on the hill and pitched brilliantly during seven innings of work, giving up only three hits with no runs or walks, while striking out five batters. The problem came in the eighth inning when Hunter Jones and Rhett James combined to give up four runs before Daniel Hodges was called on to get the final out of the inning. Hodges (3-0) picked up the win, going 4.1 innings, giving up three hits while striking out five batters without a walk. Hodges has now pitched 28.2 straight innings dating back to last May 31st, without giving up a run.

After three scoreless innings, the Seminoles got the offense started in the fourth fram when Jerrod Brown single to center and moved to second when Eddy Martinez-Esteve was hit by a pitch. Balkcom then singled to right to lead the bases with one out. Aaron Cheesman then brought home Brown with a fielder's choice, and Sauls singled home Martinez-Esteve to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

FSU picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh when Sauls reached on a bunt, moved to second on a throwing error, to third on a balk, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

In the eight inning, Jones got the lead-off batter to strike out before giving up consecutive singles to leftfielder Paul Gillespie and firstbaseman Joe Koshansky. James then came into the game to pitch and gave up a single to catcher Scott Headd that scored Gillespie and cut the lead to 3-1. After a strikeout, designated hitter Matt Dunn singled up the middle to score Koshansky, and shortstop Mark Reynolds singled to right-center to score Dunn. Hodges was brought in, and gave up a single to centerfielder Chris Sweet that scored Dunn before a strikeout ended the inning with the Seminoles down 4-3.

Brown flew out and Chris Hart grounded out to start the bottom of the
inning before Martinez-Esteve tied it up with a homerun over the screen
in right.

After three scoreless innings that had the Noles with the winning run on second base with no outs twice, FSU finally got the win in the bottom of the twelfth when Tony Richie led off with a walk, moved to second when
Brown was hit by a pitch, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hart, and scored on a throwing error by Koshansky.

With the sweep, the Seminoles improved to 3-0 in the ACC and 24-2 overall while Virginia fell to 9-8 and 0-3 in conference play. After a week off, the Seminole travel to Kinston, North Carolina for a three-game series against the NC State Wolfpack next weekend. Game times are 7:00 on Friday, 1:30 on Saturday, and noon on Sunday.
