Pam and Kid tie the Nashville knot
By HEATHER BYRD
It was a cool summer Wednesday night on Lower Broadway. The honky-tonks were bustling with country music fans and the mixed sounds of music and laughter poured out onto the streets through every crevice of the buildings.
And even though it's not all that rare to spot a celebrity or two taking to the renowned stages of these legendary venues for a surprise performance, it is completely extraordinary to witness the nuptials of a rock star and his infamous blushing bride. But that's just what happened Wednesday with Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson, and those who were present knew they were in for something special, even though the couple had their first wedding ceremony last month in St. Tropez, France, and announced that others would follow in Detroit, Malibu and Music City.
Just before midnight on Wednesday, Judge John Brown's telephone began to ring and on the other end was none other than publicist and personal pal Kirt Webster of Webster PR.
Judge Brown's recounting: " 'Are you sleeping?' he asked. 'No,' I said. 'Do you want to come and do a wedding?' he asked. 'Tonight?' I replied. 'Yes,' he said. And I said, 'Well . . . yeah . . . sure. Do they have a license?' 'They don't need a license,' Kirt said. And I had a vision of whoever it was coming to the house and me not having to go anywhere, but once he told me who it was for, I said I'd be right down to Tootsies. I wasn't in bed yet, but I was close. But I didn't mind a bit because I didn't have a whole lot going on at that hour. In fact, when I first heard that they were going to have a Nashville wedding, I called Kirt and told him I wanted to perform the ceremony."
The World Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge he speaks of has been featured in numerous magazines and feature films as one of Nashville's most celebrated honky-tonks. It has been frequented by penniless songwriters and musicians and visited by handfuls of musical icons, and so it seems only fitting that it would be the perfect spot for an impromptu rock-star wedding.
And on Wednesday night, it was packed, which is not at all uncommon for the popular venue. Onstage, the blushing bride, Canadian beauty and PETA activist Pamela, clad in a short, fitted, white mesh mini-dress and stiletto heels, stood next to her beau, Detroit's "favorite son," Kid Rock, aka Robert James "Bobby" Ritchie, before a crowd of cheering fans.
"Kid kept asking the crowd to quiet down on the microphone, but they would just yell louder. Then I asked them to quiet down just for a moment. The entire ceremony took only five minutes," Judge Brown says.
Witnessing the ceremony were Kid's publicist and friend, Kirt, and Rae Krenn of The Palm in Nashville. Rae is mother to Aussie country music singer Sheree Austin, who has performed onstage with Kid in Las Vegas a few times.
"I had worked a 14-hour shift at The Palm, and Kid rang me at home and asked me to come down," she said in her charming Aussie accent. "Pam really is a sweet, sweet lady, and Kid was an absolute gentleman. I just had to stand there as one of the witnesses, but the crowd was going wild! It was a night in Nashville that no one will ever forget!"
After the ceremony, Pamela, Judge Brown, Rae and Kirt left the stage and returned to their booth to watch Kid perform a number of songs including Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and Hank William's Jr.'s "Family Tradition." He performed for almost an hour before moving the party across the street to The Palm for champagne and cocktails.
On her Web site diary,
http://www.pamelaanderson.com, Pamela wrote: "Marriage Number 3! Nashville Tootsies. In front of the coolest crowd. Bobby's singing 'Sweet Home Alabama'!"
Well, Pamela may be a gal of few words and fewer clothes, but it looks like she may have just found her Prince Charming. Hopefully, they will live happily ever after. Congratulations to the happy couple!
