<a href='http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49218-2003Dec9.html' target='_blank'>WASHINGTON POST 12.9.03</a>

here are some highlights...

Quote:Duke basketball had acquired, along with the heady joys of national championships, a dangerous and destructive tradition called bench burning. After a big win, students dragged the wooden benches outside their dorms into a big bonfire in the middle of Clocktower Quadrangle and got as drunk as possible to heighten the effect. There were serious burns from students falling or being pushed into the fire. There were broken bones from benches dropping on legs and arms. Police officers were hit in the head with bottles.

Quote:Much of the reaction to the bench burning ban had been vehemently negative. Students complained that their rights, and even worse, their hallowed traditions, were being violated. An anonymous flyer encouraged students to burn the benches anyway. "Bonfires are not the problem," it said. "Drunken students are not the problem. . . . THE POLICE are the problem. More injuries were caused by police brutality than the celebratory fires."

I never want to here any more **** about UMD students and their drunken "riots"

Your point? We have an planned rally to burn benches. That's not even close to the same as tipping cars, setting trash cans on fire and vandalizing your OWN CAMPUS.

Only Dook nerds could hurt THEMSELVES trying to riot! Sorry, but I find this absolutely hilarious!

My first post back this season is to give props to the thread starter for knocking down the arrogance of the dukies. We all knew it happened everywhere...now we can actually prove it. And your meek attempt to classify levels of riots and destruction is laughable. Sit your a$$ down and take it.

Since we have devolved to arguing degrees of riots at this point:

1) Riot activity at College Park generally occurs along Rt1, which is not on campus, therefore, PG County Police are obligated to respond, not University Powder Puff Girls

2) Rioters on Rt1 are mostly non-students. The crowd that causes problems are generally hooligans that migrate to the area for the expressed purpose of getting drunk at the establishments there and then causing problems.

3) If you do not believe #1 and #2, just check the police reports and press articles about the arrests and the proximity of the problems.

4) If Durham were located anywhere near the metropolitan area that College Park is, they would have exactly similar problems. I've been to Durham a few times, and the only thing there worth burning other than benches is cigarettes.

Why are you guys defending this type of behavior no matter where it takes place?

Do you Marylanders feel like rioting is some sort of God-given right?

I'll never understand yankees.
