bumpy road gets worse for Sean
The New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets announced today that they have waived forward Sean Banks.
Banks was originally signed by the Hornets as an undrafted free agent on Oct. 1. He spent the first seven regular season games on the Hornets

This move means either Sean did something, or the Hornets have something brewing...
Why give up on Banks out of the blue like that?

it's really disheartening for that former Tiger - he had a ton of skill and could have been something special basketball-wise - and not only that, he was a pretty highly intelligent guy - he just has some demons he is fighting.......

I thought I heard a while back that he stayed in the dog-house with that organization. Being late for practice and minimal effort at practice...basically all the usual.
I forget where I heard that...
I hope he gets things right...with the numbers he was putting up, somebody will pick him up.

Why can't he just succeed? It would make for a good comeback story-type of movie or book. ;-)

Because on the whole he is of questionable character.

Reminds me a lot of William Bedford.
Sad thing is, you can't coach heart and desire to do things the right way.
Its up to him to chance.

dont want to sound like an a-hole but Sean Banks almost sent this program swirling around a cess pool and if it was not for the fabulous play of the new guys we have brought in, then the only coverage from ESPN we would get is for recruiting players that have a fetish with burning ppl (a 17 yr old female at that) with a cigarette. Personally, if he does great in the NBA then good for him but i refuse to follow someone who screwed up more than he even attempted to help here at the U of M...I believe someone said that he has "Demons" in his head...if so then they are bout half the size of Russia

Cal had some interesting comments about recruiting players with character, when asked if he tried harder this past recruiting season to get players with better character.
This was an obvious reference to Banks, and Cal even mentioned him by name, and said it was his fault for accepting that kind of behaviour. He also said that if he benched players last year for such conduct that we would lose, and then the whole team would be penalized. Said that this year the bench is his friend and he can bench players, and has done so this year, for not doing the right things such as being late, going to class, etc.
He said that with the limitations in recruiting he can't be positive about character because some guys are able to fake it during his limited number of visits with them.
Tommy, on the other hand, seems to make it a central part of his coaching philosophy to recruit character over ability.
Does this mean Tommy is a better judge of character than Cal? I don't know, but I do know we haven't had that kind of problem on the football team. Why can't Tommy go along with Cal on a designated character assessment recruiting visit?

some of you folks
arson of a car
counterfeit money
on field brawl
players run by Tommy for character issues AFTER he recruited them.
Coaches are not always right about kids and the simple fact is Tommy, as far as I know, has never been sitting in the living room of a top 10 talent that had questionable character and that wanted to play at Memphis. Tommy also can get away with going 7-4 or 6-5 and to Mobile the rest of his life and be loved. Cal keeps going to the NIT he will get run out of town. Please rethink what you just posted.

You really are proving to be an ignorant little :censored:. To even dream of holding our bball program and football programs to the same standard shows a total lack of gray matter on your part. Our bball program has had expenditures in the top 5 of all programs for the last 5 years and has ended up ranked each and every year in the middle of the pack and called a disappointment. Our football team, on the other hand, has had expenditures around the bottom third of the NCAA and finished the last 3 years in the top third of D-I teams.
The bottom line is that if the bball team doesn't make a serious run in March ( Elite Eight at bare minimum) we should reassess whether we are getting the returm on investment that we are entitled to. Just the facts punk, If you even try to argue about this you'll show how little of that gray matter that I referred to earlier that you really have.
This is Coach Calipari's chance to justify the money we pissed away (excuse me....."invested in") him for the last five years.

I hate those Cal vs Tommy posts....they only come up when our own board starts them. Bottom line is that both are doing one heck of a job. RC's probably the happiest man alive right now.
Cal gets treated like Mack Brown around here though.....just keeps getting ripped by some.
It ultimately comes down to the talent...Cal finally has some. It still doesn't mean he's going to the Final 4 this year....it's a tough road.....gotta have the breaks, gotta be playing on all cylinders when it counts. But hey, if we come close this year and reload again next, our program is a success in my opinion.
About 90% of Division 1 schools would have taken Sean Banks in a minute. Everybody on here was all worried about him going pro before he even showed up...if that had happened, Cal would have been wrong for recruiting him for a different reason. It wouldn't make a difference if Cal was making $100K or $2 million a year...the challlenges are the same. The only difference is if Cal wasn't here, we'd be out there playing with all the leftover Texas jucos and promising Bolton graduates we could get.

That's what really sucks... it's not like he's just a dumb*** and never had a chance; instead, he has issues that keep him from making the most of his otherwise great potential (as a player and as a person). Sad.
