Seminoles slam the Mountaineers
by Drew Hankin
The Florida State baseball team routed Appalachian State in Friday's series opener 11-2, led by left fielder Gibbs Chapman's two homeruns and five RBIs, and a solid seven inning pitching performance by Michael Hyde. Chapman's grand slam in the bottom of the fourth, and solo shot in the eighth were more than enough to give the Tribe their 14th win of the season. Second baseman Tony Thomas also had two hits and four RBIs for the Noles.
Hyde improved to 3-1 on the season with a 109 pitch outing, giving up only one earned run on six hits while walking two and striking out six batters. Matt DiBlasi and Trent Jarvis combined for scoreless eighth and ninth innings to finish out the game.
With one out in the second inning, shortstop Ryne Jernigan singled and stole second, center fielder Shane Robinson extended his hitting streak to twenty games with a base hit, and second baseman Tony Thomas walked to load the bases for Chapman's slam over the right field screen which gave the Seminoles a 4-0 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning when ASU finally got a run when right fielder Travis Hunnicut singled and went to second on a walk, before scoring on a hit up the middle by designated hitter J.J. Rollins to cut the FSU lead to 4-1.
Florida State got that run back in the bottom of the inning when right fielder Ruairi O'Connor reached second on an error by the third baseman, took third on a passed ball, and scored on a single up the middle by Thomas.
ASU closed the gap back to three again in the top of the seventh with an unearned run when center fielder Chris Baker reached on an error by third baseman Bryan Henry, and scored on a sacrifice fly to make a 5-2 ball game.
Thomas finally broke the game wide open in the bottom inning for the Noles with a bases-loaded double down the left field line that scored three runs.
An inning later, Chapman led off with his second homerun of the game that gave the Seminoles a 9-2 lead. Catcher Aaron Cheesman then doubled down the right field line, and pinch hitter Danny Diaz drew a walk before designated hitter Brandon Manasa singled to right to load the bases. Pinch runner Dennis Guinn then scored on a fielder's choice by third baseman Charles Cleveland, and Diaz came home on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Danny Wardell to make it 11-2.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 2:00 on Saturday with junior Barret Browning (2-0, 0.86 ERA) on the mound for Florida State.
