FSU sweeps the Hilo doubleheader
by Drew Hankin

The Seminoles took game two of the doubleheader against the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo on Sunday by a score of 9-1 in game four of the series.  Bryan Henry (1-0) made his first career start on the mound for the Noles, and pitching five scoreless innings to earn the win.

In stark contrast to his usual motif, center fielder Shane Robinson waited until his very last at bat in the sixth inning to record a hit, and extended his hitting streak to twenty-five games, good enough for sixth in Florida State baseball history. Second baseman Tony Thomas became for the first Nole batter since Jeremy Morris in 1997, to hit two triples in one game, including a bases-loaded three-bagger in the sixth.

Relievers Trent Jarvis and Matt DiBlasi pitched the final two innings for FSU, with Jarvis striking out the side in the sixth.

The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Robinson drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a fly ball, and scored on a grounder by designated hitter Aaron Cheesman.

The Noles made it 2-0 in the second when Thomas hit his first triple and scored on a bunt single by shortstop Nick Francis.

Two innings later, Florida State picked up their third run of the game when right fielder Ruairi O'Connor drew a walk, went to second on a balk, and scored on a triple by third baseman Charles Cleveland.

The score remained 3-0 until the top of the sixth, when FSU turned the game into a blowout. Francis led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and moved to third when Robinson had his single to right. A bunt single by left fielder Gibb Chapman plated Francis, and a base hit to left brought home Robinson, before Brandon Manasa drew a walk to load the bases for Francis, who emptied the bases with his second triple of the game.

Francis led off the next inning as well, and doubled before going third on another double by catcher Danny Diaz. Outfielder Jack Rye made it 9-0 in favor of the Noles with a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Francis to come home.

Hilo's only run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Matthew Haasenritter hit an RBI-double off of DiBlasi that cut the Seminole lead to 9-1.

FSU improved to 19-1 on the season, and have now won eleven games in a row. Hilo dropped to 1-26, and have lost fifteen in a row. The series concludes on Monday at 8:00 pm EST with freshman Ryan Strauss (1-0, 5.06 ERA) making his first career start as a Seminole.

Congrats on your red hot start to the season, I know you are in the soft part of your schedule right now but the boys are taking care of business.
ASU has struggled this year but has played one of the toughest schedules in the nation and it doesn't get any easier in non conf matchups, ASU faces LSU this weekend in Baton Rouge. The Devils have won 5 of the last six including Ws over Baylor, UNC, ECU and Ohio State during the stretch.

The Noles were wondering just how tough UNC was. When we heard that ASU beat them, we found out. Apparently UNC has good pitchers, but lost some key players to the draft last year.

So far our only test was Auburn whom we took 2 out of 3 games from. Tonight (3/10/05) we play the 1st of 3 games against the Univerity of Hawaii who should be better competition.

Congratulations on beating some good teams. 04-rock
