Rainbows decimate the Noles
by FSU Sports Information

All good things must come to an end and for the third-ranked FSU baseball team that end came Thursday night at the hands of the University of Hawai'i. The Rainbows (10-8) ended Florida State's 13-game winning streak by handing the Seminoles (21-2) their worst shutout loss in program history. The 15-0 defeat was the most lopsided loss since 1982 when FSU dropped a 21-5 decision to Georgia February 20.

While the Seminole win streak came to an end Shane Robinson's hit streak continued as the sophomore recorded a hit in his 28th straight game with an eighth inning single. It was the second straight game he extended his streak in his final at bat and it is the latest he has had to wait for a hit in 2005.

Florida State allowed a season high 19 hits in the loss and the 15 runs allowed were the most allowed since a 15-2 loss to Virginia May 8, 2004. Rainbow starter Stephen Bryant (4-0) went seven innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out eight Seminoles while issuing four walks. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Michael Hyde took the loss for FSU dropping his record to 4-2 on the year. Hyde's final line was 5 2/3 with 10 hits, 10 runs, all of which were earned, four strikeouts and two walks.

Hyde was cruising through 2 2/3 but a single and a steal put a runner in scoring position. When UH shortstop Joe Spiers got to second, as soon as Hyde set, he took off for third and before Hyde realized it the infielder had swiped back-to-back bases. The mental lapse seemed to shake Hyde who walked the next two batters and then gave up a two-run single putting the Rainbows up 2-0. Hyde next gave up a double off the left field wall as the two-out rally continued with UH going in front 3-0. The Rainbows went up 5-0 on another extra base hit plating the runners at second and third as Hyde continued to labor.

Hyde's two out troubles continued in the bottom of the fourth as he gave up a single and Hawai'i then swiped their third base of the night.  Another double drove in the sixth run of the night for the Rainbows.  Things got worse for the sophomore as three pitches later he gave up the first home run of the season to Hawaii when Isaac Omura went yard over the right field wall extending the lead to 8-0.

It took 5 1/3 innings but FSU finally got a hit when Tony Thomas, Jr. sent a double into the gap in right giving FSU its first base runner since a two-out walk in the first inning.  After recording the second out of the inning, Gibbs Chapman drew a walk to put runners on first and second. The Seminoles couldn't get a run home though.

Hawai'i put two more runners in scoring position before giving way to Stephen Ochs. The freshman's third pitch of the game was wild scoring the ninth run of the game and an infield single made it 10-0. Ochs gave up two more hits to load the bases as FSU continued to struggle with two outs in an inning but the freshman got out of the inning without any further damage.

Hawai'i loaded the bases again in the seventh with a couple infield hits and an FSU error, the first of the night. The Rainbows eventually batted around putting up the final five runs of the game.

The Seminoles will continue their series with Hawaii Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 p.m. Tallahassee time. Steve Melewski's live radio broadcasts will be available on WFLA locally and on the Internet at seminoles.com. Game Tracker will also be available for the three-game set. Junior Barret Browning (2-0, 1.35) is scheduled to throw for FSU.

NOTE: Seminole baseball fans, their families and friends can get a live glimpse of the team in Hawaii Friday at 8:30 p.m. EST. The team will be posing in front of the Duke Kahanamoku on Waikiki Beach and there is a 24-hour live web cam focused on the statue.
