Noles blank JU as Robinson ties Drew
by Drew Hankin

Shane Robinson's third inning single brought his hitting streak to thirty-four straight games, and tied him with J.D. Drew for the longest in FSU history on Wednesday night, as the Seminoles shutout the Jacksonville Dolphins 9-0 in front a partisan FSU crowd at The Baseball Ground of Jacksonville.

Robinson also doubled and scored two runs for the Noles, who also got big offensive days from catcher Aaron Cheesman, who had two RBIs, second baseman Tony Thomas Jr who was on base four times, scoring each time, and first baseman Danny Wardell who hit a three-run shot in the eighth inning.

Hunter Jones had perhaps his strongest outing of the season, throwing six shutout innings of six-hit ball, while striking out three batters without issuing a walk. Ryan Strauss, Kevin Lynch, and Tyler Chambliss each pitched an inning of scoreless ball to finish out the game.

After two scoreless innings, the Seminoles finally got things started in the top of the third with a leadoff single by second baseman Tony Thomas Jr. Robinson's record-tying base hit moved Thomas to second before both runners advanced on a balk. Catcher Aaron Cheesman was then intentionally walked to load the bases before designated hitter Brant Peacher was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the game. Right fielder Ruairi O'Connor then brought Robinson home with a groundout to give FSU a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Florida State took a 3-0 lead when Thomas led off with a walk, went to second on a base hit by left fielder Gibbs Chapman, and scored on a single to right by Cheesman.

The Tribe picked up another run in the sixth, when first baseman Ryne Malone walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI-single by shortstop Ryne Jernigan that gave the Noles a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh inning, Thomas led off the seventh with another walk, and quickly moved to third on a Robinson's double down the left field line.  Thomas then scored on a strange play when Chapman reached first safely after striking out on a wild pitch. Cheesman's second hit of the game then brought home Robinson to make it a 6-0 game.

Designated hitter Josh Spivey led off the eighth inning with a walk, and moved to second when Thomas was hit by a pitch. Wardell then launched his second homerun of the season to clear the bases and gave Florida State a 9-0 lead.

FSU has now won 30 of the last 31 games against Jacksonville, with the Dolphins only beating the Noles twice since 1994.

The Noles improved to 25-4 on the season while JU fell to 13-12. FSU now travels to Durham, North Carolina for a three-game series against the Duke Blue Devils this weekend. Game times are 3:00 on Friday, 2:00 on Saturday, and 1:30 on Sunday.
