FSU edges Clemson in the ninth
by FSU Sports Information

W - Chambliss (5-1)  L -  Kopp (2-3)

In one of the oddest endings the fans at Dick Howser have seen in quite a while, the sixth-ranked Seminole baseball team used a walk-off safety to down Clemson 5-4 in the first game of a twin bill. The win gave FSU the first two games in the series and it was the 15th win for Florida State in the last 17 games in the series. Tyler Chambliss (5-1, 1-0) picked up the win and David Kopp (2-3, 0-1) was the hard luck loser for the Tigers. The win improved FSU to 29-6 and 7-1 in the ACC as Clemson fell to 14-11 and 5-3. Shane Robinson once again extended his hitting streak to 40 games.

After leading the game from the third inning on, Clemson tied the game up in the top of the ninth with two away on an RBI single. Bryan Henry, who was 0-for-3 on the day, got the Seminoles started in the bottom of the ninth with a double into left field. After an intentional walk to Robinson, new Clemson pitcher Stephen Clyne got Gibbs Chapman to hit a fly to shallow center but the ball was lost in the sun and fell to the ground. The runners had to hold up allowing the center fielder to cut the lead runner down at third. While the Tigers were taking their time walking the ball back into infield Robinson swiped third setting up Aaron Cheesman’s safety squeeze scoring Robinson with the game-winning run.

Florida State starter Michael Hyde got touched up in the first inning.  FSU’s leader in wins gave up a lead-off single and then a sacrifice moved the runner into scoring position. Hyde got out number two before allowing an RBI double to put the Tigers up 1-0.

Tiger starter Kris Harvey got into trouble himself in the bottom of the first as he walked the first two Seminole batters he faced.  After a strike out, Jack Rye singled to center but Robinson got gunned down at
home trying to score from second. FSU tied the game up though on Brant Peacher’s single through the right side.

Harvey started the second by putting the first two batters on again this time via two hit by pitches. The Seminoles were unable to get a sac bunt down for the first out and then a double play ended the threat.

Clemson broke the tie in the third.  A lead off single followed by an out and another base knock put runners on the corners. The lead runner came home on a pop fly deep down the left field line that shortstop Ryne Jernigan corralled but he couldn’t throw out the runner tagging up at third.

The see-saw battle continued in the bottom of the inning as a hit batter, a single and a wild pitch put runners on the corners with nobody out for FSU. A walk loaded the bases as Harvey continued to struggle looking for the first out. The junior hurler didn’t get the chance to work his way out of the jam as reliever Kopp was brought into the game.  The first pitch he threw sailed past the catcher scoring the tying run and moving the runners up a base. A walk to Peacher loaded the bases again and Ryne Malone brought the lead run home on a ground out to second staking FSU to a 3-2 lead.

For the fourth time in his 40-game hitting streak, Robinson extended his streak in the fourth inning. He then swiped second to get into scoring position with one away. Gibbs Chapman then drove Robinson home with a double off the fence in right.

Clemson put its lead-off hitter on in the sixth with a lead-off double by Taylor Harbin. After the first out of the inning, a walk and a single brought Clemson within a run at 4-3. That hit ended Hyde’s day bringing Matt DiBlasi into the game. The junior walked the first batter on four straight pitches to load the bases but ended the Tiger uprising on a double play retiring the side.

FSU brought on ace closer Tyler Chambliss in the top of the ninth and he gave up a leadoff single to open the inning. A sac bunt moved the tying run into scoring position. Clemson took advantage as Jesse Furgeson laced a two-out, RBI single into right driving in the tying run.
