Georgia Tech takes game one from FSU
by Drew Hankin

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Florida State Seminoles 6-4 on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.  The Noles played a solid game, even getting the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but catcher Aaron Cheesman fell a few feet short on a fly ball to
deep left in front of the wall to end it.

FSU actually out-hit the powerful Yellow Jackets, with center fielder Shane Robinson, third baseman Ryne Malone, and shortstop Ryne Jernigan each with multi-hit games.

Barret Browning pitched well, despite giving up six runs in six innings on five hits.  He struck out seven batters and only walked two, and basically made two bad pitches - both hit for homeruns that accounted for five of Tech's six runs.

Brian Chambers and Matt DiBlasi combined to keep the Jackets scoreless for the final 2.1 innings of the game.

GT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Wes Hodges singled, stole second, went to third on a fly ball, and scored on a groundout to short.  Browning then hit right fielder Jeff Kindel with a pitch before catcher Andy Hawranick hit a monster shot over the left field wall to put the Yellow Jackets ahead 3-0.

The Seminoles came right back in the next inning with three runs of their own which began when Jernigan singled and went to second on an error by the left fielder. Jernigan went to third and right fielder Ruairi O'Connor reached on a fielder's choice when GT's shortstop threw to third and the ball got away for the second error of the inning.  After second baseman Tony Thomas Jr and Robinson both struck out, singled to right to score Jernigan. A double down the left field line by Cheesman scored both runners and tied the game at 3-3.

After a couple of scoreless innings, Tech got their high-powered offense going again in the bottom of the sixth when Hodges doubled with two outs, designated hitter Jeremy Slayden drew a walk, and first baseman Matt Wieters hit a blast to left that put GT ahead 6-3.

The Seminoles were able to get one of those runs back in the top of the eighth when first baseman Danny Wardell homered to left, his third of the season.

Florida State fell to 33-9 and 9-4 in the ACC, while the Jackets improved to 27-7 and 14-2.  Game two of the series is scheduled for 1:00 on Saturday with Michael Hyde (6-2, 4.10 ERA) on the mound for the
Noles.

The headline in the Tallahassee Democrat's article has forced me to make a comment - I don't know of a single FSU fan in that stadium last night who felt "devastated" after last night's game, and nothing I heard from the coaches or players following the game led me to believe that they were "devastated" either.  The Noles played a very solid game, didn't commit an error, and outhit a team who came in hitting over .340 as a team.  I agree with Coach Martin that this game was encouraging in many ways.

But all of the hits in the world don't mean anything when those guys can't cross the plate. That shows the superior defense & clutch pitching by Tech.

Matt Wieters is a stud, BTW.
