Henry and the Noles dominate Miami
by Drew Hankin

Bryan Henry and the Florida State Seminole baseball team dominated the Miami Hurricanes in a 13-1 win on Sunday, to salvage game three of the series with UM at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables. Henry's eight-inning masterpiece had the Miami batters completely stymied, only giving up four hits - all of them singles, without issuing a walk, and struck out four batters. The Canes only got one base runner to second base off of Henry, and that was on a balk in the second inning. The Seminole defense did their part to help Henry, turning two double plays and playing errorless ball.

With wins over cross-state rivals Florida and Miami, Henry will probably be in the running for several pitcher of the week awards, and has already been told he will start next Friday's game against the Virginia Cavaliers back home in Tallahassee.

The FSU offense finally unleashed on the suspect Miami pitching with thirteen hits, including a grand slam by first baseman Danny Wardell and a two-run shot by shortstop Ryne Jernigan. Center fielder Shane Robinson, catcher Aaron Cheesman, and second baseman Tony Thomas Jr also had multi-hit days for the Tribe.

Hurricane starter Ricky Orta had trouble from the very beginning, walking Robinson and third baseman Ryne Malone to start the game before throwing a wild pitch to put runners on the corners with no outs. After left fielder Gibbs Chapman struck out, Cheesman brought home the first run on a awkward single through the right side of the infield, and Jack Rye plated the second run on a sacrifice fly to right field that gave the Noles a 2-0 lead.

Florida State extended their lead to 3-0 in the next inning when Jernigan singled and scored on a triple into the right field corner by Robinson.

UM got their only run of the game in the bottom of the inning when catcher Walter Diaz singled to left, went to second on a balk, and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Roger Tomas.

Two scoreless innings later, Thomas led off the fifth with a single to right and went to second on a base hit by Robinson, before Malone drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change and a strikeout by Chapman, Cheesman brought Thomas home with a sacrifice fly to center field, before right fielder Jack Rye was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Wardell then launched his grand slam over the wall in right to break the game wide open, and give the Seminoles an 8-1 lead.

The Tribe added another run in the next inning when Robinson singled with two outs, stole second and went to third on a bad throw by the catcher, and scored the unearned run on a balk.

After a pitching change to start the top of the seventh, Cheesman singled through the left side of the infield, but was erased on a fielder's choice hit by Rye. Wardell then singled before pinch hitter Brant Peacher doubled to the wall in left-center, scoring both runners and gave the Noles an 11-1 lead.

Wardell walked with one out in the top of the ninth inning, before Jernigan applied the exclamation point on the Seminole win, with a two-run homer to the scoreboard in left to end the scoring at 13-1.

FSU snapped a five-game ACC losing streak and improved their overall record to 35-13 while their conference mark improved to 10-8. The Hurricanes fell to 31-10-1 and 15-5-1 in the ACC. Florida State has the week off for exams, before hosting Virginia next weekend in a three-game series at Howser Stadium. Game times are 7:00 on Friday, 7:00 on Saturday, and 1:00 on Sunday. Friday's game will be shown live on Sun Sports Network.
