Seminoles complete the Maryland sweep
by Drew Hankin

The Florida State Seminole baseball team moved into fourth place in the ACC on Sunday with a 4-2 win to complete the sweep over the Maryland Terrapins, combined with an 11-7 Clemson loss to Virginia Tech. After defeating the Terps in the first two games of the series by a combined score of 15-3, the Nole offense struggled scoring, despite amassing eleven hits.

Mark Sauls (6-1) was the big star of the game, picking up his second win of the week with a seven inning, four-hit performance. Kevin Lynch struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eight inning, and Tyler Chambliss earned his thirteenth save of the season, despite a rocky ninth inning.

Center fielder Shane Robinson led off the game with a single up the middle, and scored on left fielder Gibbs Chapman's tenth double of the season that gave FSU a 1-0 lead.

Chapman had a monster weekend against the Terps, going seven for fifteen with five runs scored, seven RBIs, a double, a triple, two homeruns, and one stolen base.

The Noles added to their lead in the next inning when designated hitter Josh Spivey singled , went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double down the left field line by second baseman Tony Thomas Jr. After Robinson was hit by a pitch, Malone brought home Thomas with a single up the middle that made it 3-0.

Florida State's final run of the game scored three innings later in the top of the fifth, when Chapman doubled down the right field line, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Aaron Cheesman, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by first baseman Danny Wardell.

Maryland picked up their first run of the game in the bottom of the inning when Sauls walked catcher Bobby Ryan, who later scored on a double to left by shortstop Elliot Singletary.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, third baseman Jason Von Behren led off with a single to left off of Chambliss, and moved to second on walk to first baseman Taylor Baum, before an infield single by pinch hitter Brian Jarosinski loaded the bases with two outs. Chambliss then threw a wild pitch past Cheesman to score Maryland's final run, before he struck out the final batter of the inning to end the game.

The Seminoles improved to 41-14 and 15-9 in conference with the win, while UM fell to 22-30 and finished their regular season ACC schedule with a 7-23 record. This was Florida State's twenty-fourth consecutive win over Maryland, and the first ACC road-sweep by the Tribe since last season's Wake Forest series in Winston-Salem.

FSU returns home and has a day off before hosting the Stetson Hatters for two games this week. Game times are 7:00 pm on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with Michael Hyde (6-2, 4.48 ERA) and Hunter Jones (4-2, 4.61 ERA) getting start for the Noles.
