Quote:FSU's Malone Named ACC Player Of The Week For The First Time
Sophomore was dominant in leading FSU to a 5-0 week including a sweep of the Heels.
May 16, 2005
Greensboro, NC - Seminole sophomore Ryne Malone was named ACC Player of the Week after leading the Seminoles to a 5-0 record including a sweep of then-No. 8 North Carolina. It is the first ACC Player of the Week award for Malone in his two-year career and he is just the second Seminole to win ACC Player of the Week honors this season. It is the fifth ACC award for a Seminole though as three FSU pitchers have been named ACC Pitcher of the Week this season.
It is hard to imagine Malone having a better week than he did last week as Florida State went 5-0 including the first ACC sweep of North Carolina since 2001. In five games the sophomore hit .579, slugged 1.105, drove in 11 RBIs and recorded five extra base hits (two doubles, a triple and two home runs). He had four multi-hit games last week and four multi-RBI games including a five RBI day versus the Tar Heels that included a walk-off three-run home run with FSU trailing by two runs. He hit the game-winning homer with two outs in the inning when he was down to his last strike. Malone hit another homer that drove in the eventual game-winning runs in the opener of the Tar Heel series setting the stage for FSU's sweep.
Versus the Heels alone, Malone hit .615, slugged 1.308, drove in nine runs, scored six runs and hit a double and a triple on top of his two home runs. He reached base almost 69% of the time versus UNC and he did not strikeout once all weekend against the Carolina staff. Last week he was a perfect 4-for-4 versus left-handers and he hit .714 with runners on base, .625 with runners in scoring position and .750 with two outs in an inning including four two-out RBIs.
The Seminoles will conclude the home portion of their regular season schedule Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. when Jacksonville comes to Mike Martin Field. It is the fourth and final game of the series with the Dolphins. Florida State then concludes the season with a three-game series at NC State.
Way to go Ryne!!!
