JACKSONVILLE, FL -- So what if it took three extra innings for Aaron Cheesman to make the play to win the game? It didn't make a whole lot of difference to Florida State's senior catcher.

Cheesman, stuck on the wrong end of a bizarre play in the ninth inning that allowed North Carolina to tie the game, laid down a perfectly placed bunt in the bottom of the 12th that gave FSU a 3-2 victory over the Tar Heels.

"Making teams walk off the field is a great way to win," Cheesman said.

For the fourth time this season, the Tar Heels walked off the field after another disappointing loss to the Seminoles (49-16). FSU will now play the winner of Wednesday's late game between Wake Forest and Georgia Tech on Thursday night.

In the seventh inning, FSU actually strung together four singles and had a hit batsman - but failed to pad its 2-1 lead. With runners on first and second and no outs, freshman Tony Thomas was picked off of second thanks to a heady throw by Webb. Malone then singled Shane Robinson to third but Robinson was thrown out a batter later by trying to score on a bloop single to left field.

It appeared that Robinson was going to try to tag up at third when the ball dropped - and he was gunned down trying to steal a run. After Cheesman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Danny Wardell struck out looking to end the inning.

"That was an inning you'd like to forget," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "I admire these young men for persevering. Nobody dropped their heads or felt sorry for themselves."

North Carolina's Jay Cox led off the ninth by reaching on an error and then advanced to third on a groundout and a sacrifice bunt. That's when FSU reliever Tyler Chambliss seemingly ended the game by striking out North Carolina's Matt Spencer on a curveball in the dirt. But the ball got away from Cheesman, forcing him to throw to first for the final out. The throw hit Spencer in the back, allowing Cox to score from third.

"I don't know if I would have done anything different," Cheesman said. "I thought I was going to hit Wardie right in the chest. I thought I made a good throw.

"That was very uncharacteristic of myself. I was disappointed in myself because the game was over. But you have to forget about it and I was just hoping to do whatever I could do to help the team win from there on out."

Cheesman got his chance for redemption in the 12th.

Malone opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second when Gibbs Chapman was hit by a pitch. Cheesman then placed a bunt down the first base line to advance the runners. Webb opted to try to throw Malone out at third rather than taking the easy out and the ball bounced away from Chad Flack and into left field.

Malone scored easily on the play to end the game and keep FSU in the winner's bracket. It also allowed Cheesman to wipe away the disappointment from the errant throw in the ninth.

"It's sad we had to play four more innings," Cheesman said. "But I tell you what, we've got a bunch of guys who don't quit. In my five years here, this is a group of guys who really get after it. We enjoy being around each other."

All the drama on the base paths overshadowed quality pitching from both teams. North Carolina starter Robert Woodard (7-1) kept FSU batters off-balance for most of the game before allowing two unearned runs in the sixth.

With two outs in the inning, Gibbs Chapman reached on an error. He advanced to second when Cheesman walked and then scored on a single by Wardell. Jack Rye then added an RBI double for the second run. Those runs seemed to give FSU the only cushion it would need, especially with the way pitchers Bryan Henry and Matt DiBlasi were throwing.

Though Henry didn't appear to have his best stuff of the season, he allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings and kept a strong group of hitters quiet all game.

"North Carolina is very good," Martin said. "Bryan Henry pitched what I thought was a very good ball game. We hadn't played anybody this year with seven left-handed hitters."

DiBlasi cruised through pitched 1 2/3 innings before giving way to Chambliss, who leads the ACC in saves. Chambliss pitched a season-high four innings to earn the win. He closed out the ninth with a strikeout to keep the game tied. He also coaxed a big double play ball in the 11th to end that inning.

"I got comfortable out there and got into a groove," Chambliss said. "They kept telling me one more inning, but they were going to have to pull me off the mound to get me out of there. I was going to finish that one out."

Martin praised the effort turned in by his sophomore closer.

"He's going to come to us tomorrow and tell us that he's ready to go an inning," Martin said with a smile. "We'll discuss that later on."

Junior Mark Sauls will start for FSU on Thursday.
