Here are some random thoughts after watching the Heels lose a close one to Tech on Saturday:
1. The run defense appears to be much improved. In the past, teams seemed to rush for 8 yards on first down every time. Against Tech, we held Daniels to minimal gains (or negative yardage) on a vast majority of his carries.
2. The jury is still out on Baker, but I thought he held his own well for his first start. Tech has quite a formidable defense, and Baker did okay against their pass rush. Obviously, we need to see how he performs against other defenses before we make a judgment either way on his abilities.
3. The running game was highly ineffective. I'm not sure if it's because we were behind the whole game and forced to throw the ball. As Bunting well knows, we need to have an effective running game to win. I will look for that in the game against Wisconsin.
4. Pass defense wasn't as bad as it seemed, I think, except for third downs. We need to step up and make stops on third down, and that didn't happen until late second half on Saturday. I will say that some of the acrobatic catches made by Bilbo and other Tech players were defended about as well as they could have been.
I'm really intrigued by the Wisconsin game for a few reasons. The Badgers have really rolled on offense in the first two games, and it will be a great test to see how we try to contain them. I think they are more one-dimensional than Tech on offense, but certainly no less explosive. Calhoun will be a handful for our run defense. If we contain him, though, I think we have a chance to win.
GO HEELS!
