MEDIA WATCH- THE BARTOW INTERVIEW- May 17
Remember when I couldn't believe the softballs Don Helman was throwing to Jo Ann Paty about the Pirate Club and said that if he was under fear of reprisal for asking "Why is it that the Football Foundation can raise $300,000 in a few months with no program but you could only raise $127,000 in five years for an existing program?" he should give the interview to his co-hosts?
Well, he found a way to get around it this time. Have Joe Avento ask the toughies.
Again, this really isn't a knock on Helman. The way ETSU acts, where if you correct Wilsie Bishop and tell her that ETSU never did win a National Championship in rifle, they brand you as a "mean ol' assassin" and try to destroy you.
Never mind that they are a "mean ol' athletic program" that would rather give a scholarship to a rich family in Europe than a working class kid from Kingsport. But I digress.
The sad thing is that if the broadcasts go to Holston- Helman may very well be out of a PBP job.
And you do NOT want to lose Helman on PBP.

Okay- now on to the interview.
The interesting things that came out here is Bartow spoke of Dante Williams transferring for more playing time, but stayed mum on the other two transfers.
Spoke highly of the players he got- and stated he might be after guys who were even better. Nweke, by any chance?
But the thing that intrigued me is he kept talking about JUCOs, but, even more, transfers from "BCS schools."
Going so far as to use the example of "An ACC player who would fit our needs."
It was said in the hypothetical, but to be that descriptive, well-
What contacts does State's current coaching staff have with the ACC? Are there any post players unhappy right now in the ACC?
Still would like to have heard these two questions-
A- Why no recruits to date for local players?
B- Why was not recruited heavily when his father was the second leading scorer in Miami Hurricanes history and he was playing at a high profile school in Miami?
That said- this is still the greatest show in the history of sports talk radio because of all the AC/DC bumpers they play.

Final note- Bartow spoke openly about how players went to a college because of the coach. That if a player was going to Tennessee- he was going to play for Bruce Pearl.
This is obviously a statement regarding his contract.
Right now, a high school player doesn't know if Bartow is going to be going there after 2009.
Hence, there are two open scholarships and they are hoping for transfers and JUCOs- and the only two high school guys they got were completely off the radar.
He also spoke of Pigram playing the point guard as a backup at the current time.
I'm not too pleased with that. I think you don't want your top scorer playing point- as the demise of ETSU hoops under Tim Smith's leadership clearly proves.
Then again- I can't see Pigram going for two when you need a three, can you?

The PG can be a scorer if under control, Jennings stepped up and led the team in scoring (20+) the year Dennis had to Red shirt, of course he also had over 300 assists that year as well.

It's like having a QB who is your leading rusher.
One last comment on the morning show.
Before Bartow's interview Helman was speaking ill of an article written by Jamele Hill for ESPN the Magazine.
And he kept calling Hill "he."
Hill is a she- complete with a spot on ESPN's programming.
She is also a radical left-winger (which makes her fit in to ESPN quite well) and was probably as responsible for the demise of Don Imus as anyone by getting the National Association of Black Journalists on his case.
So to me, an unfair comparison of Brett Favre to Pacman Jones is not a surprise.
