Next year's men's hoops tournament
Spring meetings are coming up in June. Probably no expansion news, but tournament sites will be interesting.

Will men's hoops be in...

Nashville?
Johnson City?
Macon?
Jacksonville?
DeLand?

Hello ASun'ers/TAAC'ies. Nice to catch up on some of the going's on in the League. Good luck to everyone in the Baseball Tournament coming up... Hopefully someone can knock off Stetson and give the league two Tourney Bids.

As for the Men's Basketball Tournament, why not give Macon a shot? Geographically it works and Mercer has never hosted the Tournament (although it has been in Atlanta and Statesboro previously). Do the ASun Brass not like Championship Events being played in their Hometown?

I know that it comes down to bid dollars though, so if not Macon, then I could see the Tourney heading back to Jacksonville for another shot down there.. I think this time around would be quite a bit more successful than last.

Mercer's arena is brand new and great, but max attendance is 3100. I wonder if that holds back anything? Mercer is probably just not willing to spend the money on it though. I hope I'm wrong.

As far as travel goes, I kinda like having it in Johnson City. It's an easy drive for Campbell fans, as well as those from G-W, Belmont, and Lipscomb. A central location for those four schools + all the ETSU fans.

How was JU's attendance last year after moving from Swisher to downtown? JU support wasn't all that great when the tournament was down there a few years ago. Would it be better now? Not sure how many Belmont/Lipscomb fans would travel to JAX, but they travelled well to JC.

I would like it to be at Jacksonville since Jacksonville has the greatest classic rock station known to mankind!

One of the main things you have to look at is gym time for all the teams.

Both tournaments are being planned at the same time and that is 16 hours worth of practice time that is needed, which is why Nashville and Jacksonville seem like the prime choices.

Nashville absolutely makes the most sense, UNLESS the OVC tournament is that weekend too over at the Nashville Arena. With the top three teams up here, and top draw being ETSU, if the A-Sun is thinking about trying to make money and have a somewhat full looking arena they'll play the men's at Belmont, the women at Lipscomb. Keep in mind they are supposed to combine the tournaments this year and GET THE HELL OUT OF DOTHAN!!!
Besides, what better to do then to go watch basketball then head over the Loews Motel to listen to Buddy Owens. :-)

I forgot they were combining the tournaments next year. BigCamel and BucLover bring up another point...how and where will they schedule the games?

Let's say it's in Nashville. Will they:

a. Have the two tournys at two different venues simultaneously?

b. Have all practice sessions at Lipscomb and play all games at Belmont (or vice versa). If they do this, they'll have to start Wednesday. How will that work?...reward the men's & women's #1/#2 seeds by scheduling their first round games Wednesday with the winners getting Thursday off? Play the women's games early and the men's late? OR have the women's 1st round Wednesday and the men's Thursday?

If it's in Jacksonville, would UNF get involved or would it only be JU (Swisher and the downtown arena)?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is important stuff!!

Even if the OVC Tournament is in Nashville, you can still play the A-Sun one at the same time.

I think the best way to set up the event would be to play the Women's First Round on Wednesday, Men's Quarters on Thursday, Both Semis on Friday, Both Finals on Saturday

I had never thought about the 1/2 quarters on Thursday to reward them with a day off and I really like that idea.

Also, I think it is pointless to have the two tournaments in the same city, but at different venues. The whole point of having them at the same place is to combine your fans, bands, staff, etc... and if you split them up, it defeats the purpose.

I totally agree that the two tournaments should be in the same venue.

After a little more thought, I'm not sure that I like the idea of giving the #1/#2 seeds Thursday off. That hurts the fans that travel to see the quarterfinals, making them wait two days until the next game. It's bound to happen if there are Wednesday games, though.

Let the ladies play Wed/FriSat and the men Thurs/Fri/Sat!

I thought this was something that was normally handled during the Spring Meetings.

On the ASun Website, the meetings are listed as scheduled for June 5-7 in Daytona Beach.

Mercerfan,
Last year the sites were already determined for the basketball tournys. I think 75% of the tournament sites for next year have already been determined, but there a few (including basketball) that have not been yet.

RE: Next year's men's hoops tournament
Macon deserves a chance within the next couple years. I think it makes sense to move the tourney around a bit, especially to those schools with new facilities. Unless there is a compelling neutral site, I don't think it's really fair to play it at the same schools year after year (ETSU, Nashville, Jax.)
