Samford has accepted an invitation to leave the Ohio Valley Conference for the Southern Conference beginning in the 2008-09 academic year, SoCon commissioner John Iamarino said Thursday morning.

The league's presidents met via teleconference Thursday morning and unanimously voted in favor of inviting Samford into the SoCon, according to Iamarino.

Iamarino said a formal announcement was coming later this afternoon.

Now....does this open up a spot for the BUCS in the OVC?

This is a REAL reason now to fire David Mullins.

Samford is the travel partner for Chattanooga that ETSU thought they could be.

Oh, and by the way, Samford was in the A-Sun as recently as 2000 and went to the NCAAs their last two years there.

On the other hand, I have been told the OVC Commissioner went to a few Bucs games this year.

So here's the question- in 2012 would you rather see-

A- ETSU football, and the Bucs playing in the OVC or Big South

OR

B- No ETSU football, but Mullins and Stanton disgraced memories and the Bucs back in the So Con as a basketball school?

C- No ETSU football, Mullins and Stanton beloved, and still in the A-Sun?

The Southern will get two bids next year. Samford is coming to SAVE THE SOCON!
Unwittingly if the right choices are made with football, it very well could be a longterm benefit for ETSU that it did get dropped. Fact is there really isn't alot of difference in Elon, Wofford, Samford, Liberty, Concord College, Carson Newman, etc... (Yes I know C-N is D-2). I'm sure that UT-C, App State, Western, and Ga. Southern are just ECSTATIC to see another crap ass school like this join that conference.

I don't believe I ever said the So Con would get two bids next year.

They are, however, clearly a better basketball conference than the A-Sun (who isn't?) and are closer to that than any of the above three conferences, hence Samford's interest.

Samford is where Chan Gailey and Bobby Bowden got their start.

Yes, they had a poor season last year. I think they can be competitive in the future.

By the way, Wofford was in the Division I-AA playoffs a couple of years back.

Great! SAMFORD IS CHANTASTIC!!!! Whoo hoo Wofford overspent and got to the playoffs!
Samford doesn't have a prayer in that conference, they weren't very good in a really bad OVC.
