Belmont Game without our band and cheerleaders
I can understand if our team felt like Campbell let them down at the A-Sun tournament. This might be the partial reason why we played so poorly against Belmont.

Belmont had spirit. They had their band, their cheerleaders, and their mascot along with a whole section of fans. To our credit Campbell had a great showing of students (including small wonder,"superfan," and several band members) and alumni. However, the players should have had the support of our pep band, cheerleaders and Gaylord the Camel. If the cost was too high then Campbell should have asked the alumni association for help.

Any other thoughts on this?

Owlzfan84: Gaylord the Camel is the mascot of Campbell University. Gaylord (while funny I admit) is actually in honor of Gaylord Perry, famous Baseball Pitcher and former Campbell student ('58-60).

I'd say it has to do with the "higher ups" not giving a crap about athletics. Hopefully some more athletic minded people step into high roles at Mercer and Campbell. I wouldn't bet much on higher ups at Mercer knowing anything about athletics. I would think the same thing happens at Campbell.

So even if it were mentioned (probably isn't), but lets say someone says "Should we send the band and cheerleaders to the conference tournament for X number of dollars?". I think we know the answer.

So is it Gay for short? Judging by the mascot costume Gay is a one humper. As bad as that costume looks it is a far sight better than the privious one which by the way looked gay. I don't suppose one can do much with a camel costume to make it look good. By the way has Campbell ever thought about going back to the original mascot which was a Hornet?

I doubt that Campbell would ever consider returning to the hornet. There is a lot of history steeped in that camel!! BTW: the "live" camel's name is actually "Humphrey"

I remember when "Humphrey the live camel" caused a delay of game after he pee'd on the court during the player intros!! Sometimes in life, you just know something is about to happen and I remember that being one of those times. I don't recall who we were playing, but I do remember the visiting team having a big laugh. I believe that might have been the last time they let Humphrey go into Carter Gym.

OC: Humphrey spit on my grandmother one year during homecoming!

Andone: I don't know what happened to Humphrey. Is he still at Keith Hills? We can ask the AD on the gocamels site. Who wants the task?

And the answer is ........

The "live" camel, Humphrey, was around campus several years ago when he was a younger camel and could be "handled" without difficulties. A full-grown male camel could be a liability problem around groups of people without proper supervision and training. We do not have those resources readily available in our area. Humphrey is older and much larger now and is actually owned by the former Director of Athletics, Mr. Tom Collins. Currently, Tom houses Humphrey at a wildlife farm in the Fayetteville area. Thanks for your interest in Humphrey.

Campbell University

--my boss told me that it use to live out past Collins Park Apartments on the right and one night a bunch of guys went out and got it drunk and goofed around with it, but anyways i say bring back HUMPHREY
