3 more reasons the Tri is a lousy sports area
A- The crowd of 5,100 last night.

We've had some lively debate on whether or not those are actual numbers or not. Historically ETSU has jacked attendance figures.

However, I am willing to believe that more people are attending ETSU games.

And that's unfortunate, because it is a validation of the moves of the current administration- cutting football, dropping to the A-Sun, and harrassing and defaming fans, cheerleaders and reporters.

BUT WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT AS LONG AS THE TEAM PLAYS NELSON MUNTZ! YAAAAAAAY!!!!

The message sent- ETSU fans are sheep.

B- Tri-Cities sports fans are pulling for the Colts in the Super Bowl. Overwhelmingly. We even have a White's Supermarket chain cheerleading for them ("We think Peyton Manning is the greatest thing since Super Bowl Sunday").

But the player with the most impact in this game is not the New Orleans-born Manning. It is Thomas Jones, from Big Stone Gap.

The Colts can win if Manning has a subpar day- see their playoff wins against Kansas City and Baltimore. The Bears will not win if they cannot run the ball.

Yet we are selling out our own backyard for the Great God UT. And I maintain VERY few other areas would do this.

Go to ETSU strength coach Lee Morrow. He's from Alliance, Ohio.

Ask him if during Super Bowl IV, the people in the Carnation City were pulling for hometown boy Len Dawson and Kansas City or Ohio State's Jim Marshall and Minnesota.

For the population of this area to HIKE THEIR SKIRTS UP AND RENOUNCE THE HOMETOWN HERO for this bond to a quasi-home team is disgraceful!

If Cooper Manning doesn't get hurt, Peyton Manning is an Ole Miss Rebel and Kansas State wins the 1998 National Championship. Let's keep that in mind.

C is below.

First of all, I want to know how I could write "0le Miss" and it AUTOMATICALLY was rewritten as "Mississippi"- but regardless.

The PRIMARY THING THAT MAKES ME THINK THIS IS ONE LOUSY SPORTS TOWN IS-

This column-

http://media.www.easttennessean.com/medi...lisher.com

The headline recommending students not approve the hike in activities fees reads "Consider ETSU students future"

Okay- let me consider that. 63 fewer scholarships. Less attention to the university and region. Less commerce and industry around the area.

This "writer's" comparison of a jumbo jet to a football team is beyond absurd.

Now, I might be able to just dismiss this as the "counterpoint" to another column on the next page promoting football's return.

However, on Jan. 18, a letter writer named Amanda Smith penned this gem-

"Instead of football, why not promote soccer at ETSU, attracting students who can compete in a sport that is popular worldwide?"

Dear Amanda then theorizes that we should have ETSU reknown for its local hiking trails.

Okay, Amanda, I'll explain it to you this way.

BECAUSE SOCCER IS NOT POPULAR WORLDWIDE! WE ARE THE LEADING SUPERPOWER IN THE WORLD AND WE DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT FREAKING SOCCER!

THIS IS AMERICA! WE WANT AMERICAN SPORTS! 5000 PEOPLE WILL SHOW UP AT AN ETSU FOOTBALL GAME! 50 PEOPLE WILL SHOW UP AT A SOCCER GAME- ALL OF THEM PARENTS AND GIRLFRIENDS OF THE PLAYERS!

THAT'S WHY!

By the way. I played soccer collegiately.

For a person to write a letter stating that soccer, hiking, and, what's this, "track, cross-country skiing, and whitewater rafting" would have the feedback of football is ABSURD!

ONLY IN THIS AREA FOLKS! ONLY IN THIS AREA!

Man those people are at every school. And I think you'll find an even split in this area hoping that Thomas Jones plays well. Damn that kid could play ball. I couldn't imagine someone like him coming through SW Virginia now, he'd score everytime he got the ball. (Which wasn't much different than when he was at Powell Valley).

Colts shmoltz.

And to say that there are as many people in the area rooting for the Bears is ridiculous.

Maybe in Virginia- I don't know. But even when I was reading Tri-Cities Sports, Ron Bliss' article on the game didn't mention Jones until the fourth paragraph- after two paragraphs fawning all over Peyton Manning.

Then when Bliss finally gets around to mentioning Jones, before he can list what college Jones went to he says "WHO TOYED WITH SIGNING WITH TENNESSEE!"

So what? How irrelevant is that?

As for me, I'd like to see Tony Dungy and Ron Moore win. And Manning is class.

But there have been plenty of classy athletes and I'm not sure any of them were worth selling out my town.

But the Colts thing is really the third of my complaints.

I want to know who the moron is that thinks soccer and hiking will lead ETSU to great fame and fortune is- and just what her upbringing was?

Did she ever receive food? Was sniffing glue her only form of nourishment?

The first one- yeah- it really is disheartening to see so many fans blindly accept the crap ETSU has given us and now applaud us in our new role as not a developing basketball power- but rather Nelson Muntz.
