That's great that FGCU is moving into the AtlanticSun. SW Florida didn't have a Division I basketball team before. I think they have the money in that area to put together a nice holiday tournament and bring in some very big names. That would be a good move for a small school looking to build its name. FGCU played Drexel this year and got beat big so they have a while to go on the court.

MercerFan Wrote:I'm bringing this topic back from the dead... all the talk of teams leaving the A-Sun is starting to tick me off. Tell me ONE thing that a team has done since they left the A-Sun since the UCF, Troy, FAU group. Yea that's right, NOTHING. Of course I'll get the "it takes time, we're building" excuse. But honestly, is that fun?

Mercercan, I'm not sure if you were referring to UCF/Troy/FAU or or to someone else. It sounds like you mean someone else, but I don't think there is anyone else? lol...anyway...

What has UCF done? UCF has improved recruiting to the point where we are now competitive as a top tier team in Conference USA. Since school started we have had over 3,000 a game and sold out tomorrows game against #11 Memphis a few days ago. Even when we had a 14 game win streak in the A-Sun we had trouble getting over 3,000 until the Troy game.

I agree that jumping to another conference just to say you did isn't good enough. However, if that move is in line with your long term goals for then you've got to do it.

It's not a matter of "if" UCF will return to the NCAA, it's only a matter of when. And unlike the A-Sun, we can go if we have a great year - even if someone gets hot and knocks us out of the conference tourney. But more importantly, when UCF goes to the Dance again, it will NOT be as a 14, 15 or 16 seed.

Sorry if this post sounded malicious (or nearly as malicious sounding as Mercerfans) but there's no need to get angry over school leaving.

As I said originally, stop taking on schools that have bigger ambitions, unless the conference itself is going to get some ambitions of its own.

St... for some reason when I posted that, I had it in my mind that UCF had another losing season going. In a future post I corrected myself and mentioned that UCF & Samford are indeed better off right now. http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/asun/phpbb...php?t=1278

Sorry about that, my apologies for posting without knowing the full truth.

Also -- Like I've said time and time again, I understand 100% why schools with football teams want to switch conferences. That makes perfect sense. The only thing I find interesting, is how the other sports seem to suffer upon switching conferences. Most of the argument on this thread is how well the football teams are doing -- which is irrelevant all together with A-Sun ties.

FAU really should have stayed though. They are a baseball school. Think of what our already outstanding baseball league would be with them on board still.

Mercerfan,

in response to your FAU comment. The fact of the matter is if you have a football team, and you are in Florida...you will NEVER be a "baseball school." or a "Basketball school"

Heck, look at UF- they've been in the CWS and won the hoops title in the last 24 monthes, and they are still a football school first. Even before the 2006 BCS championship.

Anyway - UCF is 9-4 in Conference USA and back to 20 wins for the 4th time in 5 years!!!

I miss the A-Sun days, but it is definitely an exciting time here in Orlando.

Best wishes to all of my former A-Sun brethren. Great to see the board doing so well!

UCF is definitely having a great year in hoops. Your coach Kirk was fantastic in the A-Sun, I'm sure he's up to his old tricks in C USA and that's why you're on winning ways.
