The rumoured hire of Matt Doherty as new head basketball coach is finally happening. Thank goodness the coaching search has ended in such a positive way! Hope has been restored to FAU hoops! 04-cheers

Congratulations. Sidney did do some good things at FAU in recruiting and getting some recognition with the NCAA birth. The Sunbelt will be great for you guys.

This is a great hire for FAU.

He will bring top level recruits to FAU. I hope you can keep him long term.

First off, good hire.

Secondly, my oh my how far Mr. Dohtery has fallen!! This isn't a slap at FAU, but this man was at UNC just a few years ago.

Just my opinion, but there must be something fairly severe about this man that turned so many schools with open coaching spots away from him.

I believe he turned down being considered for many jobs because he wanted a break. Am I mistaken?

I guess I'm the first to say it, but ok, FAU hired a big name. But what exactly has this man done? He coached Notre Dame to the NIT's (not NCAA's) then went to North Carolina and turned a winner into a loser. Then again, if he had any success at all at either of these two programs he wouldn't be at FAU. As fellow former A-Sun members I'll be rooting for you guys next year but honestly I think it may be a little premature for the " Hope has been restored to FAU hoops!" talk, we'll see.

He recruited a NCAA championship team. He would've won it, had he been allowed to stay around.

Oh yes, of course we know that he would have won it this year if he was still around, I'm sure that Roy Williams spent this season at the beach and didn't do anything to coach that team. And there's lots of evidence of that with Doherty being the coach that ended Carolina's streak of 27 straight NCAA appearances and took the team to it's first 20 loss season in school history. Doherty is a good recruiter and his name alone will help FAU bring in talent, but his time at NC can be described as nothing less than an utter failure.

Dougherty will easily be the biggest name coach in the sun-belt, and more than likely one of the best coaches. He will also get things done at FAU the same way O'Leary is getting things done at UCF. I imagine they are in line for a new bball arena (their current one was designed by my friend's dad, but I can admit it sucks.) There is a lot of work for FAU to do before basketball can compete with its young football team (who are growing rapidly) or other bball teams in the state, but this is definitely a step in the right direction. My brother goes to FAU, but has only been to one game (when ucf played them). I can picture him going to much more than that now.

Question about FAU's hoops facilities, are there any plans to upgrade the existing gym you all have? UCF folks complaign about the arena, FAU's hoops facilities are aweful, wonder what Dougherty's opinions are about the facilities and attendance? Hopefully for FAU they will both increase with the entrance of the Sunbelt. Good hire and hope you all do well in the Sunbelt next season.

Failure? Yes...but what was the talent he took over with as good as the guys Dean Smith had? Dean Smith is a legend. There will be few ever like him. There was no question that Doherty wouldn't live up to that. And..without the guys he recruited..well..by the way they treated Doherty, Williams would be out as well.

I'm just curious as to what your schools fan base is like? I remember toward the end of the regular season, Mercer & FAU played a game of great importance for both schools (at FAU)... I was listening on the radio broadcast, and at times I would hear very strong Mercer chants, and the reported attendance was less than 400? Seemed odd.

Our attendance has been terrible through the last few years as most of the small fanbase we have had grown disenchanted with Sidney Green. I can promise you there will be a NOTICABLE rise ina ttendance and excitement now that Dooherty is in charge!

Thats good. I was just surprised because FAU didn't have a bad team last year, had an explosive offense (fun to watch), and was in the race for the whole season. Good luck with the new coach.
