Since I don't think I actually know any of you guys, I've often wondered if any of you ever hung out at the original World Famous Poplar Lounge. It was a great Tiger and Showboats hangout. Probably the last bar I was in before I left Memphis many moons ago. Don Dog and Wally Burger and cheap beer. Great live music. Joe Walsh appeared and did some James Gang songs. Little Stevie sat in with whatever was going on after a Bruce concert. Many others that I won't go into. Three Mule Plow before they were reincarnated. Cut Outs on Wednesday nights and Joe Norman on Sundays. Just curious if there are any of you out there. 04-cheers

I went to Memphis State. Then, I went to Dental school at UT- Memphis. For whatever reason, it was during my dental school days that I spent a lot of time at the Poplar Lounge. Dancing on the bar Wed. nights while the cutouts played was a lot of fun. ( To be young again.)

One night when the 1st Persian Gulf war broke out, the cutouts were playing at the lounge. Artemias Pyle, the drummer from Lynard Skynard, was hanging out at the bar.
Next thing I know, he is singing "Sweet Home Alabama" behind mic. with the Cutouts.

It was a magical moment. You would have to be there to fully appreciate it.

Joe Norman was awesome..... a friend of mine would play harmonica with him for "heart of gold" and we would go crazy.

That's nice to hear. Joe is a friend of mine and I haven't talked to him lately. I hear he still has the "Lakesiders" band going from time to time. Talk about magical moments, I think it was my first Christmas back after leaving when we were sitting at the bar, late, and Joe Walsh strolled up to the mike and belted out a few James Gang tunes. I think he then gave us all the finger salute, but that was Joe.

I drank a few beers at the old Poplar Lounge. The smell in that place would make you puke if you were not already 3 sheets to the wind.

I don't remember that, but I always appreciate your negativity.

I didn't mean to say I didn't enjoy the old place. It did have a stink of rotting beer though.

Every time I stepped foot in the Poplar Lounge it always seemed to be a wild one.

Quote:And if you've never been to the Poplar Lounge you're in for an interesting experience. It's like this, if you like your bars clean, new and populated with a "clientele" as opposed to a "crowd" you will not feel very at home in the "Lounge." If you like your bars old, beat-up and with that very slight element of danger, this is your kind of place.

I was a semi-regular in the old Popular Lounge. It was actually a pretty easy place to score chick-wise. Quite a few of our tailgate group were regulars, including Wally Burger, and still are at the new version across the street. Most grew up in midtown, a few still live there, and attended Central High.

The River Bluff Clan played there several times, then broke up, and the majority of them are now in a group calle TWO Mule Plow.

At one time that bar was an after hours biker type bar and a rough place to be. Wally and Don bought it and it became a hang out for college age kids.

Also, you might remember Red, the elderly black gentleman who worked there. He passed away about a year ago.

I just figured you knew that through observation rather than experience. If it was thru experience, I'm sure you had em' drunk enough where they weren't scarred for life.

While my memory is a little sketchy on this there was probably a time or two where it was the other way around.

When I was in undergrad ('90-'95) they had $1 longnecks on either Tuesday or Wednesday night. I want to say Tuesday, but I'm not positive.

Anyway, being the frugal (broke) college kids that we were, we frequented those nights. It was usually pretty crowded, especially in the spring and summer when you could hang out on the back "patio".

The Poplar Lounge was one of me and my groups regular "stops" on our weekend rounds from around 1977 to around '84. We would usually (read" ALWAYS) start out and end up at Park Ave Pub, but would head up around a few Overton Square establishments, but usually the Cosmic Cowboy, and hit the poplar on our way back to park Ave.

I was in there one night, because it was within staggering distance of home, shooting pool and a house across the parking lot in the back caught on fire. We went out and watched it burn as we heard the sirens in the distance.

There was also a bartender murdered in there late one night.

Not too long ago that space was used as one of the offices for drivers liscense renewal but the landlord had to kick them out because the other businesses complained that their customers were unruly and littering the parking lots with cans bottles etc.

If you need to renew your license and cannot mail it in for some reason then I reccoment the place in the hickory ridge mall.

I went there a couple of weeks ago after 2:00 on a Friday afternoon and it took about 10 minutes to get a new one.
