Countdown to Football...
04-rock

KillToppers, I know you're down with this.

So how bad will the redshirts hurt us?

Will we beat a Sunbelt team this year?

Are we safe against EKU at Smith?

Just how bad will our attendence be... an more importantly can we recover the next year???

PS -- these are all honest questions... I'm not trying to be negative. ;-)

Redshirts won't hurt us as bad as some want to believe
We have the capability of beating Sunbelts team(s), it will probably depend a lot on our confidence level when those games roll around.
Attendance avg. for the year will probably be up from last year because we have EKU, Troy, and Homecoming.

Welcome Lucca! We're so happy that you are no longer sleeping with the fishes.

Redshirts won't hurt us as bad as some want to believe

Does anyone even know exactly how many / who is redshirting?

More defense / offense players redshirting?

We have the capability of beating Sunbelts team(s), it will probably depend a lot on our confidence level when those games roll around.

See, partly I wonder just how much better the Sunbelt really is than the Gateway... I suspect quite a bit. But personally I would rather expect beatings and be pleasantly suprised than to expect to be competitive and then be sorely dissappointed. I hope I'm wrong but I do believe that we will be a couple of years away from being truly competitive.

Attendance avg. for the year will probably be up from last year because we have EKU, Troy, and Homecoming.

And the $50 season tickets. I'm getting in on that! I think we have to change our mentality and marketing. We have to start thinking of each game as a whole season and a championship in itself. And not just for the transition. But from now on.

I am SO down with the football! But I really don't have many answers yet. I have no idea who is being red-shirted this season, so the jury is still out on that one. More information to follow once I talk to my guy on The Hill. Will we beat a SBC team this season? My honest feeling is no. We are playing the upper level teams this season (MTSU, N. Texas and Troy - only missing Ark St.) and most of them away from the friendly confines of LT Smith. We have a very ugly schedule from top to bottom but what do you expect from our first year "in transition"? As far as beating EKU, someone within the coaching ranks needs to instill a drive, no a FIRE, within our guys about how we are better than EKU, over how we were embarrassed against our rivals last season. That should NEVER EVER happen again! We were outclassed, outcoached and out-hustled the whole game and I have a very bad taste in my mouth over it! So we had better be "SAFE" against EKU or we will be the laughing stocks of the FCS, let alone surrendering bragging rights over the Kernals! And as far as attendance, it is gonna be UGLY this season. Yes we have somewhat better teams to play but hardly any of them will be "W"s and the scores might be as ugly. We can recover and should have a much better class of teams to play next season, but like I said transition will be ugly! Once we get into bowl eligibility, we should be doing just fine. Especially with new rivalries wit MTSU, Troy and Ark. State. It is gonna be great, but we need to hang in there and not get too down in the meantime!

Killtoppers I pretty much agree with everything you said. I also don't expect to beat any Sunbelt teams this year although I wouldn't be suprised if we had a near miss or two.

As for EKU, I think they are dangerous for us. I think we have enough talent to beat them at home, but as usual they will come in here ready to fight for it, so we will have to be also. With the incoming class, I think this is the last year they will ever be any real threat for us (unless some things go really, really wrong).

What do you guys think about the proposed 10 year deal with them? Personally, I think its good for us, bad for them. I hope we sign it.

Personally, I don't ever wanna lose the Battle of the Bluegrass" series. I want EKU to always understand that we own them! It is the one game I look forward to every since I was 3. Long time ago!

So Killtoppers, what do you think about the Gateway v. the Sunbelt? SIU beating Indiana and UNI almost beating Iowa gives me hope that the Sunbelt will be suprised at how competitive we are. But then I look at thier recruiting classes and I have to think that we are going to be suprised at how much better the bottom 1A conference is from the best AA conference.

Any thoughts?

Yes actually I have quite a few thoughts, although not too sure how rational they are. But here they are anyway....

I loved the Gateway Football Conference, it was an incredible league to be involved in as a member of 1-AA. The quality of competition was one of the best around - second to none I feel. The teams we had in our conference were mostly playoff bound (and tested) teams with a great track record and legacy of winning. So that helped WKU become one of the best around; we were ranked in the Top 25 every year, although there were times we didn't finish there (a whole other rant for another day). We brought a Nationtional Championship trophy to the GFC in `02 and many big targets on our backs since. I feel that the a majority of the Gateway, Big South and Atlantic 10 teams could easily rival the SBC or MAC in football.

As far as the SBC goes, I know they are young conference and have to go through their "growing pains" before they are taken more seriously as a football conference. Although being in FBS, yes with the big boys, I question whether they can ever be seen as a true equal with the SEC, ACC and PAC-10. It is a stigma that will be hard to overcome and possibly shortlived. But by playing the bigger boys, we can only become better ourselves, by using them as the litmus test for a quality football program. Can it be done, yes. Will it be done, possibly. Soon? That is the real question. I think that the level of competition in the SBC is above that of the top 1-AA (FCS) schools but not by much.

Will this in turn be a good move for WKU and garner respect among our conference members? No idea until we start beating them on a regular basis. I just hope and pray that we can get good crowds for home games and continue to make the designated quota for attendance until we can develop rivalries within the SBC. The one we had with MTSU is already getting heated and I can see one with Troy and Arkansas State developing quickly. But at least there are chances of WKU being on ESPN on a more regular basis which will get the name to more people. Which should bring in more and better recruits to make a better team to beat some of the bigger boys. Kind of a circular logic there.... but not too sure where that circle got us. Questions, comments?

National Analyst Gives SBC 2007 Class High Marks
National Football Recruiting Analyst Gives Sun Belt 2007 Class High Marks

Release: 03/29/2007

Tom Lemming, highly respected national recruiting analyst for CSTV, said the respective 2007 recruiting classes for the Sun Belt Conference are very strong across the board.

"The conference really looks like it is moving in a positive way, particularly this season," Lemming said. "I typically only interview players that are projected to go to the top six conferences (SEC, Big 12, ACC, Big East, Pac 10, Big 10), and a lot of these players were signed by Sun Belt schools. They signed a lot of talent. They appear to be mirroring the success of the SEC, in that they have some new coaches coming in who have raised the competitiveness."

Lemming felt the conference

Thank you wolf.

Getting thumped by an improving Sunbelt (in the short run) will be a small price to pay if the Belt becomes competitive nationally.

RE: Countdown to Football...
Our red shirt situation is not as bad as we first thought. Six of the eight seniors that were originally going to red shirt, now aren't. We will still have several guys red shirting, but not as many of our leaders.

As for the EKU/WKU game-- it needs to die. After 2009, it won't be much of a rivalry. We will have a 22-scholarship advantage on them and will win ever year. Why would they sign up for that? They shouldn't. Some complain about losing the "Battle of the Bluegrass" -- it was lost the day we announced I-A transition.

Whoa! Whats this "designated quota for attendance" buisiness? Could you elaborate on that? Will WKU suffer some substantial penalty if they dont average enough?

In my opinion that is EXTREMELY important. I know everyone loves the Saturday football tradition but look at what programs like Louisville, Fresno St and Boise St have gained by being willing to play whenever they can to get NATIONAL EXPOSURE.

Some of you guys might not agree, but I believe WKU needs to be willing to play on thursday night, wednesday night, friday night, ANY night to just get on ESPN as much as possible.

QUOTE>>>"Which should bring in more and better recruits to make a better team to beat some of the bigger boys. Kind of a circular logic there.... but not too sure where that circle got us. Questions, comments?"<<<QUOTE

It is circular logic but it works. The more we are SEEN the more potential recruits will see us. When games are on ESPN they generally get great crowds because people know the whole nation is watching and they want to be part of it. The excitement and exposure feeds on itself and lots and lots of good things start happening.

Tell you what, I'm EXCITED about the future of Hilltopper division 1-A football!

Yeah, you have to average 15000 per game over a year once every other year. I forget the penalty exactly but it involves not being eligable for post season or something like that. Supposedly if you do it again within a certain period of time you could get demoted back to AA.

I agree as long as it doesn't kill attendance too much.

I don't think anyone knows the penalty because the NCAA has yet to enforce one. They slap your wrist, you get published in the paper as being under 15K and thats about it.

The Florida game is still in the running for Lincoln Financial broadcast.

By 2008 or 2009 HSSN will be broadcasting games.
