Try and find someone already fluent in it that can help you out. Having someone to talk to in the language should make learning it easier.

Go Tigers!

If you only have a year (well, half a year now), you won't be fluent. It takes much longer. However, the best thing you can do is learn from someone who speaks it well (a fluent speaker). Also, try those CD-ROM programs. They aren't the best at all ... but they will help with the basics. Try your hardest to build as big of a vocabulary as possible. That will be the most useful. It is not hard to master the present tense of verbs, which you should be fine with if that's all you can learn.

Hang around on Jackson Avenue about 7 to 9 AM any work day. I'll bet you can learn the lingo there. Tons of folks are gathered looking for work.

Another word of advice is go watch some Spanish movies. You can get some at blouockbuster or another movie rentatl place , or through netflix. Make sure you watch it with english subtiltles to understand slang of how they speak Spanish in Mexico. I can give some recommendations if need some to watch. Mexican Spanish is spoken differently depending on the region. I been in Latin America and if you try, people are kind and will help you.
