This coming team is loaded. We only lose two players after this year. 07-08... fuggetaboudit! 08-09 we will still have good players at all positions.

Not to even mention Horn's scheduling. WKU will be in the top 15 by 2008. Put it down.

It's what we hear every year from you guys.

I'm not sure what the rest of the league has, but Kermit finally may have a team to really challenge for the title. We'll see.

Now do you want to discuss your women's chances against the Lady Raiders?

No sir.

In all seriousness, the girl that played for the KY all star team that is going to MTSU was most impressive. And I am well aware that she is hardly the cream of the class. The lady raiders will be the team to beat for several years to come.

Not true... three years ago we were fairly realistic about our losses, and two years ago was very much an overachieving team... I don't think our expectations were that high. And last year... when we played S. Alabama in Mobile we beat them by one point with all of our players healthy. In Murfressboro we get blown out BUT, with key injuries AND we played the late game the night before (an especially hard fought game against La. Lafayette.) Hey if we win that one game (the championship) it would be fair to say that we dominated last year.

Any way, we will be better at point gaurd, better at both forwards, about the same at shooting gaurd (which is pretty darn good), and about the same at center. Overall we will have fewer turnovers and better defense. We play a difficult non conference schedule that will prepare us for conference.

I'm not sure what the rest of the league has, but Kermit finally may have a team to really challenge for the title. We'll see.

Tell me about your team this year... starters lost, transfers, recruiting class, etc.

That's cool. If my team was favored to win the SBC I would want to talk football too.

Kermit only lost two players, F Marcus Morrison and G Fats Cuyler. Morrison, who started just 17 games, had a world of talent but was inconsistent and an up and down player, and spent quite a bit of time in Kermit's dog house. Fats Cuyler, a good outside shot and a good team leader, who was more of a 2G than a PG, stated 23 games, but as freshman PG Kanaskie improved, Cuyler moved over to play more 2G as Kanaskie secured the PG job.

Just three were signed. Probably the best signee is Demetrius Green, a 3rd team juco All-American, was a runner-up for Mr. Basketball in KY, IIRC, in HS. Green is a 6-4, 190, 2G with excellent perimeter skills.
Nigel Johnson, a 6-2 PG out Memphis, played at Tallhassee CC his freshman year, graduating with his Assoc. degree in one year. He was a qualifier out of HS and would've likely signed with MT out of HS but things just didn't work out. As PG at the juco, he lead his team to a 31-4 record and lost in the NJCAA title game. Johnson was key in several late season and playoff games hitting the winning shot in several games.
Jay Ivey, a freshman forward from KY, is likely to be redshirted.

MT also has three players who red-shirted last season. The most highly touted is F Desmond Yates, 6-6, 215, from Memphis. Bruce Pearl recruited him, but in the end Yates signed with MT. Kermit and several others close to the program have stated Yates is the most talented player on the team. I would expect him to start almost from the beginning.
Donaries (Dino) Hair, 6-9, 210, was one of the top players in MS while he was in HS. A good mid-range shot, Hair has worked hard in the off season putting on muscle. Can cause the other team to alter their offense. In one game Hair blocked 18 shots. Darren Avery, another player from MS, is a 6-3, 200 guard. Extremely physical.

Three sophomores who saw their playing time increase late last season as true freshmen, are expected to continue to improve. Theryn Hudson, 6-10 C, 240 lbs, made a huge impact late in the season. I expect him to be a solid force in the middle and by the time he's a junior to be the dominant big man in the Sun Belt. Kevin Kanaskie, started quite a bit late in the season as a true freshman at PG. He and Johnson means the PG psotion is in very solid hands. Calvin O'Neil is a big guard who can shoot, rebound, and play defense.

Others returning include Adam Vogelsberg, Sr. 6-4 sharpshooter. MT hasn't had a pure shooter like him in a decade. Bud Howard, a Sr. 6-0 G who can come in and take control of a game through his defense, rebounding, and aggressive style of play. Marques Dawson, a 6-5 jr. F, was injured early last season and got a medical redshirt. Tim Blue, a 6-9 Sr. F, can be an exciting off. player but at times he disappeared last year. Kyle Young, a Sr. 6-10, 220, F is a solid player who led the team in FG % and can play solid defense.

My early guess at starters would be Kanaskie, Green, Vogelsberg, Yates, and Hudson. MT will be fairly young and have quality depth.

MT had the third best record last year in conference and I think we really improved with Green and Johnson coming in. The key will be how Desmond Yates contributes as a red-shirt freshman and if Hudson continues his improvement as a big man.

I'm sure wku fans will disagree, but IMHO, Kermit is the best X & Os coach in the conference. The biggest thing is he has had to cut and paste teams together his first four seasons. It appears like he's finally got the program in a position with solid talent to really do some good things in the next few years.

It certainly sounds like MTSU will be a contender. There will be some very exciting games between us this year.

I don't really know which coach in the conference is the best x's and o's coach. I tend to think that would come with experience, and Kermit is more experienced. But, I do think Darrin Horn is a fine x's and o's coach and is imho the best recruiter in the conference. Time will tell which wins out.

Could happen before 2008 but I'd settle for a solid 2006-2007 season and at least 1 NCAA tourny win.

3-star recruit gives verbal to WKU hoops...
Horn gets commitment from Frazier

As Western Kentucky's men's basketball team begins preparing for this season, it has received its first verbal commitment from a future Hilltopper for the 2007-08 campaign.

B.J. Frazier, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound small forward and product of Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., called WKU coach Darrin Horn on Saturday and told Horn of his intentions to join the Hilltoppers, Frazier said.

Frazier, who is expected to sign during the November signing period, is considered a three-star recruit on a five-star scale by Rivals.com, and had plenty of offers from other quality programs.

Frazier said he had offers from Illinois, Georgia, Georgia State, Providence and Marshall, but felt most comfortable with Western.

2nd 3-star recruit in a week...
Is '07-'08 freshman class Horn's best recruiting job yet?

Talk about it in In the Paint
Western Kentucky dipped into Florida and found a big man that flew under the radar. D.J. Magley of Bradenton Christian verbally committed to the Hilltoppers on Wednesday, according to his father and coach David Magley. (didn't realized his dad was the coach though I knew he was a former Indiana Mr. basketball)

The 6-foot-10, 258-pound center was a hot target in the fall as schools from all over the country came out to see the rising prospect but Western Kentucky fought off all of the late comers.

"Western Kentucky outworked everybody," Magley said. "They were the ones that made it feel like a family the most."
(I love this quote)
Purdue, Oklahoma, Iowa, SMU, Rhode Island and Central Florida all came in to see Magley in the fall. Valpo hosted Magley for a visit and Purdue and SMU "came really close as well," says coach Magley.

The Magley family is no stranger to the recruiting process and Mr. Magley said Horn and his staff made a giant impression throughout.

"I was a two time Mr. Basketball in Indiana, my daughter was a four time All-American tennis player at Florida and my other daughter was highly recruited out of high school and Western Kentucky was equally as impressive as any of our experiences and then some," Magley, who played at Kansas, said.

"Everything about them was positive. I can see them making a George Mason type of run."
Magley has transformed his body from 26 percent body fat to 10 percent body fat, says his father, and his game has shown the changes.

Magley joins Atlanta area wing B.J. Frazier, who committed to WKU last weekend, in the 2007 class for the Hilltoppers.
