MONROE -- Former major league and University of Louisiana at Monroe pitcher Chuck Finley was named a volunteer assistant baseball coach at ULM, coach Brad Holland announced Wednesday.
Finley joins former ULM teammate Jeff Schexnaider, who was named an assistant coach last week, on the coaching staff. Schexnaider is a former Catholic High player who has previously served as head baseball coach at West Monroe and Ouachita Christian.
"This is a great thing for ULM baseball," Holland said. "He (Finley) has a lot of college and professional experience that he can give back to the kids."
Finley spent 17 seasons in Major League Baseball with the California Angels, Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals. He was drafted by the Angels in 1985 and called up in 1986.
Finley finished with a 200-173 record, racking up 2,610 strikeouts and a 3.85 ERA during his big-league career. He is the Angels all-time wins and strikeout leader for left-handed pitchers. Finley was named to the All-Star game five times.
The 42-year old native of West Monroe played two seasons for former ULM coach Lou St. Amant from 1984-1985 and was inducted into the ULM Hall of Fame in 1996.
