Let's hear it for AD Gragg
more and more I think about what he is doing that I like it.

Moving the UofM game to 10/6 and playing @ Pitt and dumping the Idaho game (apparently using some money from Pitt).

I like it.

P.S. UofM doesn't take the first game off; UofM might not bring their "A" game 10/6.

Schedule could look like:

9/1 @ Pitt (Pitt lost their last 5 games in '06 so they are no Meechigan),

9/8 Possible MAC home game (I'd like to see BSU - we opened there in '06).

9/15 and 22 MAC games.

9/29 @ Vandy

and 10/6 @ UofM

Schedule isn't easy (and with 4 games vs. BCS teams they won't be) but it is not suicidal like '06.

*******

What could have been:

@ UofM 9/1; trap game @ Idaho 9/8; home or away MAC game 9/15.

Playing 3 road games to start the season as in '06 is a good way to kill a season.

I'd suspect the MAC will try to give us a home game 9/8.

whispers are going around throughout the MAC
that some or all MAC teams will play only 7 conference games. I guess I can't call it 'whispers' as it is all over the main board.

a 7-game MAC schedule would really help Eastern.

@ Pitt Sept 1,
I-AA team Sept 8,
MAC opponents Sept 15 and 22 (one in Ypsi),
Sept 29 @ Vandy,
Oct 6 @ The Big House.

With some luck, EMU could be 2 and 1 on Sept 15 and two of the first four games would most likely be a home.

Last year after 3 games it was: 3 ROAD losses. 03-weeping

I'm not sure if I like only 7 conference games, BUT it would really help us have an interesting September.

'06 was a nightmare for EMU FB.

I have a question then. I f they only play 7 conference games, where does the 12th game come in?..another non-conference game?

Yep,
Sept 8 vs. a I-AA opponent at home.

I do NOT know if ALL MAC teams will play 7 or if some will play 7 and others 8.

Eastern would be getting guaranteed $ from Pitt, Vandy and UofM so that takes care of the budget.

I-AA gives EMU a home game and a win (let's hope so ;-) ).

Northwestern at Ford Field on Oct 20 adds a very attractive game to the schedule.

I assume Gragg was behind moving the date of the UofM game, buyout of the Idaho road game Sept 8, looking for a beatable opponent for Sept 8 at Rynearson, setting up the series with Vandy, etc. etc.

I love ALL those moves. 04-bow

They give Genyk a chance to be successful.

I wish more MAC teams would schedule to win say 2 non-conference games.

Nothing worse then an early September Saturday seeing MAC teams losing 10 of 12 games, mostly by big margins to teams from the Big Ten, etc.

Last year was a scheduling disaster. On one hand everyone hopes EMU will raise its attendance yet the schedule last year had home games towards the colder weather (the exception being the Ford game).

Yes it appears that Gragg has done a good job with the schedule in terms of bringing in the dough. And while the promotions may seem cheesy to them its at an attempt to get people in the seats. I wonder out loud whether the promotions are being paid for out of the AD budget or private contributions. That would be interesting to know.

I actually get letters now asking me to give and updating me on things and events. Prior to Gragg nothing.

On the promotions, I think people who actually try EMU football and basketball will like the product and sports is entertainment. There's enough Div I football fans and hoops fan in the Ypsi-A2 area who can't afford to take a family to the U of M game. I find it amusing and also sad that I paid over $220 for tickets and another $30 for parking to see EMU play U of M a few years back and I got two season tickets at EMU for $162 including the Ford game and parking is always free. True EMU football is not in the same world as U of M by a long shot, but you can still take a family without mortgaging the house to go. Likewise hoops. There needs to be a marketing angle that communicates that.

Gragg's biggest gamble is keeping Genyk on board. While many of us are not impressed totally with our recruiting this year according to Rivals with 26 commits we finished 85th this year, prior years show places with rankings of 104,103, 97 during Genyk's tenure. Those rankings would probably be much worse if they took in account defections. Keeping Genyk on board was enough to at least stablize recruiting efforts a fact that shows itself in many interviews with recruits. We'll see whether that gamble pays off or not.

AD and HC
All Gragg can do is give Genyk a schedule which is attractive, pays the bills and which EMU can be competitive.

He has done that this year (assuming all that I have posted comes to pass).

Now Genyk needs to do his part by recruiting, retaining and fielding a competitive team.
