Lansing Sleeper A Sleeper No More
On the old M-Dead forum, I put this guy down as one of the top Lansing players. Need a 6'6 WR with 4.4 speed? Try Willie Brown.

I'll believe it when I see it
6'6", 210 and 4.4 and 'under the radar' 01-lauramac2

This is close to Randy Moss like. Randy ran around 4.3, I recall.

Do we have any smurfs who run 4.4 and are 5' 9" and 170 lbs?

(Skeptical) EMU Steve

Wait a second, I thought maybe he was in some foreign and distant land :shhh: where he couldn't be found...

but he could probably catch a ride to MSU's campus.

Remember, the old saying, "if it sounds too good to be true... it probably is."

I'm sure its all made up and no doubt this is some plot by high school coaches and the player (who is related to Kwane Brown of the Lakers) to dube unsuspecting colleges coaches to sign an underdeserving player with no real talent. ;-)

How about this...
"I like making plays, catching the ball," said Brown, who maintains a 3.3 grade-point average but has not reached the required test scores to qualify to play next year in college. "Scoring touchdowns, that makes a man feel real good - can't nobody guard you."

Academics.

I did note that Steve Bell from Bankhoops.com has Brown rated No. 2 at forward for unsigned Michigan seniors.

I already mentioned academics issues in a different thread to Rock.

It doesn't mean the kid doesn't have athletic abilities.

True, but academics could explain why what looks like a sleeper isn't really a sleeper at all.

there must have been 'whispers' about him.

having said that, he might look like an academic casuality, sign next week and pass his test before September. Things like that happen.

LSJ's article on signees
Brown didn't sign yesterday...

I have no idea what "the rest of the story is..." on this kid.

This one has me curious, but each year I follow recruiting I become MORE SKEPTICAL.

You mean Willie (Two Bit) Brown don't you? ;-) Actually Steve there was an article in the Lansing State Journal yesterday (Weds) edition. Here's the deal according to the paper, Grand Valley State is holding a scholie open for him as he is retaking the test later this month. There was some chatter when the original article came out on the IU board the fan's opinion is they wouldn't mind taking a flyer on the kid especially since James Hardy left the program. As it turns out IU is holding two scholies because somethings fell through. The LSJ article mentions EMU and CMU still looking at the kid-maybe so or maybe not. In the past Genyk has held a scholie or two back for late qualifiers. I do EMU was very interested in a LB out of IL who is also retaking his test this month.

My opinion is that he would be a great catch for Grand Valley. They win national championships by getting Div I talent to come to a Div II school.

The worst that can happen is the kid goes JUCO or prep school and we'll see on that level whether the hype is real. Personally lets say he runs a 4.6 or 4.7 instead of a 4.4, he still would be of interest.

But let me raise a point, which would you rather have assuming test scores are in place, a guy who played 12 quarters of football or a guy who has played football for four years and was Class A Honorable mention?

my point
is that a kid who isn't signed because of academics isn't a sleeper, but an academic risk.

it was academics, not being unnoticed, that caused him not to be signed yesterday.

If he had grades he'd signed yesterday regardless of how green he might be on the field.

Perfect redshirt candidate for a Big Ten school.

He can join a whole of PSL players regarding the academics. Its too bad, but on the other hand it does not appear EMU took too many academic risks with this incoming class.
