EMU announces plans for largest construction project in school history

Eastern Michigan University is moving forward with the largest
construction project in school history, the $100 million Mark Jefferson
Science Complex.

The EMU Board of Regents unanimously voted to proceed with the
renovation of the existing Mark Jefferson building and new construction
to make the Mark Jefferson Science Complex at its regular meeting Jan. 19.

This has been discussed for years. It's good to see it is finally going to happen. Another major step up for EMU, now that they have a competent library and a new student center. Now if they can find the money for the renovation of Pray Harold.

And due to an alum funding drive to put a new Jumbotron and eventually an indoor practice facility.

with a 1 - 11 record
don't look for any FB capital campaign soon.

There are expressions:

"Strike while the iron is hot"

"Seize the moment..."

Those expressions are appropiate for Rutgers (FB) and George Mason (hoops) but not EMU.

Don't look for anything until EMU FB has a winning record and ALUMS GET EXCITED.

Capital campaigns are rarely started unless they are successful in a quiet phase (some big money donors step forward to ensure the success of a campaign and THEN the campaign goes public).

How these work is that a team or program will turn it around and capture the attention of a few big money donors. They pledge big bucks and then the public chips in with their 4-digit pledges.

and for their 7-digit contribution they get the practice facility named for them.

Have you seen the robotic library retreival system? I got a chance about a year or so ago to see this - very cool. Reminds me of the Matrix with columns and columns of cabinets! (for books, not guns!)

CMU is the middle of a 75M drive. Think they are doing very well. A new arena or remodeled one is part of it.

Wayne State is at almost 350M of a 500M drive. A new basketball arena and I think I read new hockey arena are part of that.

CMU really needs to get something much better then what they've got.

And I believe Wayne wants to go D-I in all sports. I'd guess maybe Mid-Continent in hoops and a I-AA conference (maybe Gateway?????) for FB.

Wayne State is really on an upswing as a university and they are trying to go from a communter school to a full fledged residential campus with athletics which is integral to campus life. The area where Wayne is located, a few miles north of Comerica Park is very much a redeveloping area (much progress; much, much remains to be done though).

BTW, "full disclosure" - my undergrad is from WSU. I'd actually like to discuss Wayne with EMU Insider (someone said he has WSU connections) on the M'Dead board but he loves to get into debates. I'll pass.

The landscape in D-I sports could change within the next half dozen years if CMU gets a new basketball arena and Wayne State moves to D-I.

a little P.S.
For those posters who have seen my posts over the past 3 years, I follow ALL of the MAC schools and the MAC as a conference.

The WSU AD is the former AD at Akron and he was the acting commish of the MAC (Chryst got the job, though).

The AD brought the Akron OC (I believe offense) to Wayne and he has turned Wayne around. Think they've gone from 1 (that was the year they played at Ford Field before CMU/EMU) to 3 to 6 wins the last 3 years.

As is the case on M'Dead, some of EMU Insider's points about Brian Winters, etc. are actually valid, but anyone who argues and fights on boards their MESSAGE gets LOST in the verbage.

Of course, EMU Insider's straw man argument is that EMU should fire Genyk and hire Winters.

EMU is NOT firing Genyk so his argument is straw man.

If anyone on M'Dead cares, WSU FB might very well be on a big upswing under the leadership of AD Fournier and HC Winters.

Not that I really care, but great for Wayne State. They have some catching up to do if they are going to compete with Grand Valley State, Northwood and Saginaw Valley who year in and year out are the cream of that conference in football.

I think the only other point to make is that a Div II coach does not always make a good Div I coach.

I think another point was made on M-Dead that some recruits would prefer to go to WSU rather than EMU. I would agree especially if they wish to be in medical school and law which EMU does not offer. But overall, EMU and WSU don't even compete for the same recruits so the point was lost on me.

Best of luck to both WSU AD and the coach.

my points
the whole question about Brian Winters and EMU was nothing but a p*ssing argument on M'Dead.

He appears to be a good coach FOR Wayne State which is nice but that isn't relevant to the M'Dead board (doubt anyone there cares about WSU).

I'd be willing to bet ThOUGH that WSU goes D-I say within 5 years but until it does, what Wayne does has little relevance to EMU.

If WSU goes D-I it might affect Perry Watson and UofD recruiting as they are both Detroit schools.

One of the more relevant points that I didn't make, but should have, is that WSU produces a ton of medical doctors, lawyers, etc. and THEY are the ones contributing 7-figure donations to Wayne's capital campaign.

Eastern produces techies, accountants, teachers, etc. who can make a nice living but aren't going to write checks for 6 or 7 figures.

EMU does produce some business owners but not in the quantity of other schools.

I saw the Wayne State - Ferris State hockey game on Comcast Local last week (one of the worst hockey games I've ever seen!) I caught the interview with the WSU coach who didn't sound positive about an arena on campus. They sure could use one but the State Fair grounds is only about 5 miles from campus which is a whole lot better than the drive out to Plymouth to play at the Compuware Arena.

I keep an eye on Wayne State sports. I have several friends and a brother-in-law who are alums. I also follow the GLIAC. I expect when WSU finally goes D-I all the way their football team will find its way to the non-scholarship Pioneer League and the rest of the teams to the Mid-Con. The PL actually would save WSU money on football and I don't believe Detroit would allow WSU into the Horizon League. The Warriors would make a good travel partner for Oakland.

I'm going to wrap a few ideas into this post.

Trying to figure out what is happening at EMU, WSU, etc. is the classic "show me the money.'

I remember someone from Eastern don't know if it was (former) president Shelton or an AD say, "We have alums with means but they aren't big fans of our athletic programs."

You will remember that Mr. Halle put up some pretty BIG numbers but it wasn't for an indoor practice facility, but for a library (as indicated in a post above).

Folks at WSU are donating $ like crazy, but is it for ATHLETICS???? Would they support FB if Wayne has a 'breakout year' this year (possible)? (Dexter Eagle: I think a hockey arena at Wayne is secondary in priority to a bball arena hence the down attitude).

The point I'm trying to make is that ALL universities have some alums of wealth BUT it is a question how they see the university and its programs including athletics.

If a wealthy alum thinks EMU has a very good bus school but mediocre FB program, where is he more likely to make a 6-digit contribution? ;-)

The problem at Eastern is that we have a very small base of athletic supporters (as evidenced by our hoop and FB attendance).

EMU needs a 'breakout' season in FB or men's hoops but it isn't likely to happen soon.

P.S. our 'breakout' season in men's hoops got us 'The house that Boykins built" (the Convo Center).

Our last "Breakout" seaon in FB was during Reagan's presidency. 03-weeping but it did get us (I believe) the modernization and expansion of Rynearson.

Jumbotron Scenario
Based on what I've learned of these projects from other MAC schools:

EMU has a 7 - 5 season in '08 and excitement is running high in Ypsi.

EMU approaches former FB players, and other signficant contributors about starting a campaign for a Jumbotron.

A few big donors pledge a total of say 200 - 250K in a 'silent' phase.

EMU go to the Board of Regents and EMU Foundation.

A say 3 year public campaign begins to raise say 250K mostly from donors who would give 1,000, 2,500, 5000 or 10,000 bucks over 3 to 5 years (depending on the size of the gift).

The rest of the needed $ is pledged from Jumbrotron advertising.

EMU had a similar campaign in the early 90s (I remember giving some green for the Green).

My local Catholic Diocese a few years ago went through a similar campaign to raise well over 100M (or was it 200M?) bucks to build new Catholic high schools, etc. etc.

****

Indoor practice facility - go 9 - 3 and win the MACC and repeat the process but add more zeros to the above.

one or two big donors step forward with 1M+ buck gifts.

This WAS the scenario at both BGSU and NIU. Anyone remember when Urban Meyer was at BG and ESPN came for Gameday? After that I believe the family named Sebo donated big bucks and construction began.

Ditto for NIU - they have a big, big donor for whom their Academic and Athletic Performance center will be named.

No one wins the lottery and donates 25M to a MAC school for an athletic facility.
